ARJeffrey Epstein (1953–2019) war ein US-amerikanischer Finanzier, der weltweit durch einen der gravierendsten Skandale der vergangenen Jahrzehnte bekannt wurde. In den 1980er- und 1990er-Jahren war er als Vermögensverwalter für äußerst wohlhabende Klienten tätig und bewegte sich in exklusiven Kreisen aus Politik, Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft und Adel. Trotz eines vergleichsweise intransparenten beruflichen Werdegangs gelang es ihm, enge Beziehungen zu zahlreichen prominenten Persönlichkeiten aufzubauen.
Bereits Mitte der 2000er-Jahre geriet Epstein ins Visier der Ermittlungsbehörden. 2008 bekannte er sich im Rahmen eines stark umstrittenen Deals in Florida der Anstiftung schuldig und erhielt eine vergleichsweise milde Haftstrafe. Dieser sogenannte „Plea Deal“ wurde später heftig kritisiert, da er Epstein weitreichende Immunität einräumte und mögliche Mitbeteiligte weitgehend vor strafrechtlicher Verfolgung schützte.
Im Jahr 2019 wurde Epstein in New York erneut festgenommen und angeklagt. Die Ermittlungen deuteten darauf hin, dass über Jahre hinweg ein Netzwerk bestanden haben soll, in dem systematisch Personen angeworben wurden. Kurz nach seiner Verhaftung wurde er leblos in seiner Gefängniszelle aufgefunden; offiziell wurde sein Tod als Suizid eingestuft. Die Umstände seines Todes führten jedoch weltweit zu Spekulationen und zahlreichen Verschwörungstheorien – insbesondere aufgrund seiner weitreichenden Kontakte in einflussreiche Kreise.
Eine bedeutende Rolle in diesem Zusammenhang spielte auch Ghislaine Maxwell, eine enge Vertraute Epsteins. Sie wurde später wegen ihrer Beteiligung an der Anwerbung verurteilt.
Der Fall Epstein gilt heute als Sinnbild für institutionelles Versagen, Machtmissbrauch und die grundlegende Frage, inwieweit Reichtum und gesellschaftlicher Einfluss strafrechtliche Konsequenzen beeinflussen können.
