All transformations are invested with something at once of profound
mystery and of the shameful, since anything that is so modified as to become ‘something else’ while still remaining the thing that it was, must inevitably be
productive of ambiguity and equivocation. Therefore, metamorphoses must be
hidden from view—and hence the need for the mask. Secrecy tends towards
transfiguration: it helps what-one-is to become what-one-would-like-to-be; and
this is what constitutes its magic character, present in both the Greek theatrical
mask and in the religious masks of Africa or Oceania. The mask is equivalent to
the chrysalis.
Frazer has noted some very peculiar types of masks used in the
initiation ceremonies of some Oceanian peoples: the youths keep their eyes
closed and cover their faces with a mask of paste or fuller’s earth, and pretend not
to hear the orders shouted out by their elders. But they gradually recover, and on
the following day they wash themselves clean of the crust which had covered
their faces (as well as their bodies); and their initiation is then complete.
Apart from this—the most essential—symbolic meaning, the mask also constitutes an image bearing another symbolic meaning which derives directly from it.
The mask, simply as a face, comes to express the solar and energetic aspects of
the life-process. According to Zimmer, Shiva created a lion-headed, slender-bodied monster, expressive of insatiable appetite. And when this creature demands of
his creator a victim to devour, the god tells him to eat of his own body, which the
monster does so that it is reduced to a mere mask itself . There is a Chinese
symbol, T’ao T’ieh—the ‘mask of the ogre’—which may well be similar in origin.

BEWell first off, the equivocation hitch isn’t sketchy-but this misconception seems to be most people’s hesitation with the technique. Yes, like anything in climbing we need to use the technique right or it can be dangerous but when deployed correctly it’s very reliable even for a hundred foot rappel like this one. There are a ton of applications for the equivocation hitch and it is one of the most useful techniques for operating in a vertical environment-yes top of the list of all the techniques I’m familiar with. In this case it’s being deployed because we will not have to pull our rap lines dragging them across this lovely entrada sandstone and adding to the grooving carnage. I was disappointed to see how badly this area has been impacted by people using the inappropriate technique here (a normal two strand rappel). The increase in traffic over the last few years in these kinds of areas by people who don’t have the appropriate skills for this kind of canyon adventure is a problem. In the past a few people rigging normal raps was not a big deal, but it’s not the case anymore, the effects are pretty dramatic and you should consider this and learn the low impact desert canyon techniques like the equivocation and fiddle stick. Anyway, back to the equivocator! This application is not really where this technique truly excels, who knows where we see the true power of the equivocation hitch?

It can be easy to get caught up in a cycle of using pornography and shaming ourselves. However, we’re never beyond the help of Christ and His Atonement. Making mistakes does not mean that we are bad people. By remembering that we are children of God, we can interrupt the cycle of shame and find hope. Christ’s invitation to come unto Him with our burdens and follow Him never expires.
Consider approaching Heavenly Father in prayer and asking, “What can I do next to find healing?”

“I can say without equivocation that he was one of the great influences on American music,’ said J.C. Adderly, a former jazz musician and father of Nat Adderly and the late Cannonball Adderly.
‘He was outstanding in that he was one of those early artists who paved the way, who made it possible for musicians to go on and do other things,’ Adderly said.
“When I saw the opportunity to join Muddy’s band, he had been my favorite musician for years,” Bob Margolin reflects. “I was 24 years old and I realized just how much I would learn and grow from the experience. I was an apprentice to a master. Muddy was world class – he’s on the short list of the greatest blues musicians ever.”
“Muddy was one of those very few who had true ‘charisma.’ He affected people in a spiritual way, both with his music and personally. I’ve had a lot of thrills while I was in Mud’s band, but the biggest was playing his blues with him onstage.”
