Guitar: Fender Stratocaster (Virginia, a '54 with a HS -2 DiMarzio pickup in bridge for clarity and bite).
Eric's most famous 1954 Stratocaster is nicknamed "Virginia" after finding a piece of masking tape inside the pickup cavity (under the pickguard) that read something like "Virginia, June 1954" (likely the name of the woman who wound the pickups or a date/code from the factory). He bought it used around age 20 (early '70s) at J.R. Reed's shop in Austin, Texas, and it became one of his all-time favourites—used extensively on landmark albums like Tones (1986), Ah Via Musicom (1990), and Venus Isle (1996), plus countless live shows.
Amps: Stereo wet/dry rig—Fender Twin Reverb (blackface '65 reissue or similar, for pristine, sparkling cleans with built-in reverb and subtle chorus) paired with Marshall head (JTM45 or Plexi-style, cranked for warm, controlled overdrive).
Effects: Echoplex EP-3 (tape delay for organic, blooming echoes—key for the atmospheric swells); Ibanez Tube Screamer TS-808 (mid-boost for lead punch); Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face (occasional grit); MXR Phase 90 (subtle modulation); TC Electronic chorus/verb in rack—strictly analogue, no digital shortcuts.

HULast Friday, I had the immense honor to join these guitar luminaries for one of the final shows of the G3 tour.

SHHow insane is this classic Bm Eric Johnson pentatonic run!? This is from a live performance of “Trail of Tears” from the immortal ACL concert. He’s adding the 9th interval for that classic Eric Johnson sound! Add it into your own pentatonic lines. He then does that lick (in pentatonic box 3) where he bounces off of the fifth a couple times in a row, and it almost sounds like Bach pedal-point stuff.
