Police are meant to keep communities safe, but not all communities are safe from police — particularly Black and Hispanic communities. Three moves to reduce this. 1. Right tool, right time. Officers dealing with traffic violations and homeless people do not need military-style weaponry on the street. 2. Unlearning journey. When getting approval for more admin rights to over-ride geo-fenced bans that biometric/tech-enabled guns enable, the exam needs to be more stringent and include a greater portion on historical bias and white supremacy in policing. Active case studies — “knowing what you know now, how would you handle this case.” 3. Trust. Redirect funds from arms to community programs like hospital intervention, SAFE parks, skills training, de-escalation. Patterns of police violence dramatically reduce public confidence in police and lead some community members to see them as part of the problem.
