Ever feel like the weight of the world—and your own "stupid blunders"—is just too much? You’re in elite company. This viral collection of excerpts from Charles Darwin’s personal letters proves that even the father of evolutionary biology had days where he was "very stomachy" and "hated everybody." Whether he was struggling with the complexity of species, apologizing for a "stupid blunder" regarding clover and bees, or simply feeling "languid and bedeviled," Darwin’s candid venting is the ultimate mood for anyone having a rough week. It’s a gentle, witty reminder that greatness doesn’t require constant composure. Sometimes, the path to changing the world involves hating a barnacle or two along the way. So, next time you feel "very poorly and very stupid," just remember: you’re not failing; you’re just in your Darwin .

👞 Interesting Fact: Holiday for Shoestrings (1946) — This entire animated short is completely devoid of spoken dialogue, relying entirely on classical music pieces to drive the narrative and comedic timing. The soundtrack features prominent excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker Suite” and other well-known orchestral works, which are meticulously synchronized with the animators’ visual gags. To achieve this precise synchronization, the musical score was recorded first, and the animation was drawn specifically to match the rhythm and beats of the music.

How I’m Preparing My Excerpts🎻🎼 Step 1: Download the Score - crucial to get the full picture of what’s going on throughout the orchestra. Step 2: Listen to 3-5 recordings - first impressions really do stick! Beware of locking in a certain interpretation mentally and hearing the piece in only one way. Brainstorm fingerings & bowings. Step 3: Watch tutorials, performances, and masterclass on the excerpts. Don’t try to copy them, but it can give you a huge head start in understanding why this excerpt is being asked, what the challenges are, and some possible solutions. Getting your imagination going is the most important part! ( I love @natesviolin and @youngjiviolin.excerpts ) Step 4: Practice!! I personally limit myself to 15 min per excerpt. There are so many to cover alongside my other solo rep, so I’ve found that going into my session with clear objectives and a “scarcity of repetitions” mindset really encourages me to be constantly problem solving, and never getting bogged down in mindless “drilling”. Whether it’s for summer festivals, professional auditions, or your own education, best of luck!! Hopefully this system can help give you some structure and encourage you to find your own! I’ve been working on excerpts lately with some of my students, and it’s very interesting for me to approach them because I don’t have a lot of orchestral experience. This famous except from Beethoven’s 5th symphony always caused me trouble when I prepped it for seating auditions, so I was delighted to discover a fingering during one of our lessons that made it seem more rational and manageable. I also like this fingering because it seems to preserve the natural feeling of oscillation more than other fingerings. Otherwise, please excuse the unjustifiable rubato I took in the first two eighth note beats 😅

These short, slightly awkward passages are the ones you usually don’t pay too much attention to while practicing… because there are SO many other things happening in the piece. But then in the concert they arrive and it’s suddenly like: “Ok… wait… focus.” 🤣 Am I the only one?
