Since its start in 2012, this 24-hour event has raised millions of dollars for organizations that strengthen Lancaster’s neighborhoods, support families, and enrich lives. This year was no exception—together, 24,179 donors raised an incredible $9.9 MILLION for 444 local organizations! Look at Jo’s amazing transformation❤️ We rescued Jo a few months ago after she fell off a transport truck that was taking her to be “processed.” She had come from an egg factory farm where she was kept indoors in a huge, windowless warehouse for years— barely able to move or spread her wings. Jo was missing most of her feathers because when chickens are housed together like that, they get stressed and peck and claw at each other. When Jo arrived here, she was understandably confused. Imagine knowing only the horrible existence of confinement and stress ….and then discovering grass and sun and sky and kindness. Thankfully, that is all Jo has known for months, and it is all she will know from here on out❤️ Isn’t she beautiful?😍

It took a year of intensive care to get George feeling better. When we first rescued him, his tendons, foot bones, and hoof were so badly damaged that his vet said his every step felt like a nail💔 George had been used to pull buggies and farm equipment and one day his leg got caught in the equipment and it was badly damaged. But instead of getting proper care, his humans “pin fired” his leg. Pin firing is an antiquated procedure where the leg tendons are burned or frozen (you can see the circular scarring on George’s leg as a result) in an effort to “toughen them up.”💔 Of course this didn’t help George, but the people who had him thought it would and so they kept using him for work and his leg got more and more painful. Thankfully they eventually sought to surrender him to our sanctuary. When we agreed to take George in we had no idea how badly injured he was. His first trip to the hospital they told us he was so unstable that he was “about to walk out of his hoof” (meaning it was about to fall off his leg). So for a year we transported him back and forth to the hospital to have corrective procedures so he could finally heal. He required a custom prosthetic shoe and steel plate, that had to be changed out nearly every month. For an entire year we held our breath. And on top of the leg problems, George had alarming digestive issues, including inflammation and ulcers, which likely were related to the pain and stress he had experienced for so long. But for months now, George has shown complete recovery❤️ He is thriving today and loves his life in sanctuary with his best friend Lilith. They love to play together(!) and graze on soft grasses, relax in the sun, keep an eye on everything going on and how everyone is doing here in their home. Thank you everyone who never gave up on George! It was touch and go so many times in the first year! 😭Thank you! 😭❤️ Including his awesome medical team!🙏❤️ **NOTE: the first horse in this video is NOT George—the video is just one we took nearby as an example of his pre-sanctuary life** #igiveextra #extragive
