“What will life be like once I’m healthy? Once I have a side that actually functions like the other side? Can I teach the sides to work in unison again? Will I ever be balanced? A long time ago, I used to hate my body because of its size, but now that’s the least of my worries. I just want a body that cooperates with itself. Where both hips are without pain. Where my back doesn’t ache and my abdomen doesn’t constantly pull from hip tightness. I’m wary that this surgery will magically fix everything. But it’s the only hope I’ve got.” I slept for 4 hours the night before surgery and journaled this 👆🏻 during my insomnia because I was a complete mess, hoping I was making the right choice. Spoiler: surgery was DEFINITELY the right choice for me - I can undoubtably say I am a completely new person now; I truly feel like I have new lease on life, with or without running. I’ve gotten a few messages, asking for tips on staying positive throughout injury. And the truth is that you’re not going to be positive the entire time. No one is. There are some really dark moments and it can really effing suck. Not having a linear path is one of the most excruciating things an athlete can endure; and then feeling perplexed about what to do next when you think you’re doing everything right is even harder. But here’s the thing: I (we) can do hard things. When you’ve been pushed down so many times, you have no choice but to get back up and keep believing. Self-advocacy is a must when you know, deep down, something isn’t right. And the biggest secret to chronic/long term injury is this: it’s crucial to have people on your side to support and help along the way. I would be completely lost along this process if it wasn’t for my PT, strength & running coaches, friends, and husband. The road is long (LONG) and hard - but when you stop believing for a hot second, your people will lift you back up and remind you to keep showing up. Rehab has been going really well (honestly shockingly so) — and at 7 weeks post-op, I’m loading up squats at the gym for the first time since July and, more excitingly, get to walk/run next month (!!) 2022, you weren’t my year, but 2023…better watch out.

In runners, this can create repetitive compressive stress on the labrum and surrounding joint structures, especially during movements that involve deeper hip flexion and rotation. Symptoms often present as deep groin or anterior hip pain, stiffness, or discomfort during longer runs, faster workouts, hills, or strides. Conservative management and rehabilitation typically focus less on the joint structure itself and more on improving how the hip tolerates and distributes load during running. This is addressed through a combination of mobility, strengthening, and neuromuscular work, all performed within a pain-free or low-symptom range to reduce irritation. Mobility can help decrease stiffness and improve available range, while strength supports better movement mechanics and allows the hip to handle the repetitive demands of running more effectively. Training load management is equally important. Adjusting variables like mileage, intensity, hills, and frequency, while still maintaining consistent activity, can help manage symptoms and support progress. It’s also important to recognize that rehab for FAI is highly individual, and working with a practitioner to develop a personalized plan is always recommended.
