EBWhen I was in Iraq attached to the Marines, living out of Camp Fallujah, on our rare days off I would always find myself watching Kingdom of Heaven, trying to wrestle with the context of it. Because that was exactly what I was doing in my own life.
As I left for Iraq, my wife Jenn and I lost our son David. By the time I landed in Kuwait, I had a Red Cross message waiting for me. I literally was taken straight back the airport and flew home to be present for his still birth. We buried our son at Fort Richardson National Cemetery. Almost two weeks later, I went back to war.
I went back carrying grief I didnt know how to name. I didn’t even it had a name at all. Moral injury a wound to the soul. And wounds to the soul dont bleed, but they change how you see everything especially yourself. I was fighting in places older than civilization, surrounded by chaos and loss, trying to make sense of a world that no longer made sense.
Back then I missed the lesson in this scene. Not because I was unwilling, but because I didnt yet understand faith the way I do now. I didnt understand that hardship is a teacher, and every lesson can either draw us closer to God or push us further away depending on what we choose to do with it.
If we use our suffering to grow, to be honest, and to seek God, it shapes us and moves us closer to who we are called to become. But if we get stuck in the pain, focus only on what was taken, and allow ourselves to live as victims, we drift further from God and further from our purpose.
That is why this scene hits different now. It isn’t about blame or excuses. It is about responsibility and choice. About how we stand before God, not with explanations, but with truth, and allow even our hardest moments to move us toward Him instead of away.
