“Should I offer a dream feed?!” 🤔⁣ ⁣ I hear this question so often. The answer? Maybe. ⁣ For some babies, the dream feed is the perfect solution. For others, it’s NOT the answer. Let’s talk about it:⁣ ⁣ 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 ➡️ A feeding that typically occurs 2-3 hours after a baby’s bedtime feeding. It involves no “awake time” following the feeding. It’s often initiated by parents rather than baby. Baby is held and offered a feeding in the same way he/she is fed at every other feeding (NOT in a bassinet while sleeping!)⁣ ⁣ 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲 ➡️ To add in extra calories to a baby’s total daily intake AND/OR align baby’s long stretch of sleep with the parents’ long stretch of sleep.👏⁣ ⁣ Here are a few keys to keep in mind: ⁣ 🔑 Aim to offer this feeding prior to 10:30-11pm. This is when the sleep drive is highest.⁣ 🔑 Give it a try for 4-5 days. If it helps, GREAT! Keep going. If not, it might not be the best solution for your baby. That’s okay! ⁣ 🔑 If your baby awakens, don’t worry! Most do awaken a bit for a feeding. Let’s talk about triple feeding (nurse + bottle + pump). EVERY.SINGLE.FEED. 🫠 If you’ve been told to do this, you are probably exhausted, touched out, and wondering how long you can actually keep it up. Triple feeding *rarely* can be a helpful very short‑term plan while we figure out what’s going on with baby’s latch, weight gain, or your supply—but it is not meant to be your new normal. When every feed turns into an hour‑plus production, there’s no time left for you to sleep, eat, shower, or just hold your baby without a pump attached. That level of burnout is one of the biggest reasons parents stop breastfeeding before they’re ready. As an IBCLC, I don’t recommend triple feeding as a plan because it: ➡️ Doesn’t fix the root issue (like tongue tie, low milk supply, or ineffective milk transfer). ➡️ Makes feeding feel stressful and clinical instead of calm and connected. ➡️ Is simply not sustainable for most families beyond a few days. You deserve a feeding plan that supports baby’s growth, protects your supply, and also protects your sanity. If you’re stuck in the triple‑feeding loop and ready for a more sustainable plan, this is your sign to get real help and a clear exit strategy. #breastfeedingmom #triplefeeding #breastfeedingsupport #fourthtrimester #maternalmentalhealth

Triple feeding. That’s almost a four letter word in my book. Is it *sometimes* helpful for a very short period of time? Sure. If it’s what a family chooses to do, will I support that? Absolutely. But more often than not, triple feeding is recommended to families with no end plan - just as “yay, it’s working. Keep doing it!” I find that while yes, it sometimes increases weight gain - it leads very quickly to burn out, frustration, and often the complete ending of breastfeeding altogether. It often is doing three things not very efficiently - and I believe that when we have multiple issues, it’s usually best to tackle one at a time. If you’re stuck in a triple feeding cycle, reach out.
