EXMenstruation is the monthly process where the body sheds the lining of the uterus when pregnancy does not occur. During each cycle, hormones signal the body to prepare for a possible pregnancy by thickening this lining with blood and nutrients. This creates a supportive environment in case a fertilized egg implants. If no fertilization happens, hormone levels drop, and the body releases that built-up lining. The shedding of this lining leaves the body as menstrual blood — this is what’s called a period.
It happens because the reproductive system runs on a repeating hormone cycle, mainly involving estrogen and progesterone. These hormones rise and fall in a coordinated pattern to regulate ovulation (the release of an egg) and the preparation of the uterus. When pregnancy doesn’t occur, the body “resets” and begins the cycle again. Menstruation is a normal biological function that signals the reproductive system is active and responding to hormonal changes.
