But for too many of us, computer 💻 technology remains pretty mysterious. Now, a Japanese 🇯🇵 computer company is trying to de-mystify the ordinary PC by teaching consumers how to build their own computers.⁠ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁠ Fujitsu sells customers kits 🛠 to make notebook or desktop computers. The kits are geared towards different levels 📊 of computer savvy. A first-timer would buy the basic kit, which has a lot of parts already pre-assembled ✔. The more advanced customers can buy more complex kits with more options. Customers assemble the kits in a workshop, where engineers are on hand to help 🙋 and answer questions. Fiber optic cables work by sending data as pulses of light through glass fibers. To intercept that data, you need to physically access the cable… either at a junction point where cables meet, or by actually cutting into the cable itself. Then you install a “splitter” that diverts some percentage of the light into a separate fiber that leads to your monitoring equipment, while letting the rest continue on to its intended destination. Think of it like wiretapping old telephone lines, but instead of clipping onto copper wires to pick up electrical signals, you’re splitting light beams. The target doesn’t necessarily know it’s happening because the original signal still reaches its destination… you’ve just copied it in transit. For MUSCULAR specifically, they were doing this on the private fiber optic lines that Google and Yahoo ran between their own data centers. So when data was moving from, say, Google’s data center in Oregon to their data center in Finland, it would pass through fiber cables… possibly under the ocean, through various countries. At some point along that route, outside US legal jurisdiction, NSA and GCHQ would have physical access to splice into those cables. The reason this was particularly valuable is that the data traveling between Google’s internal data centers wasn’t encrypted the same way data traveling from your device to Google was. Google encrypted the “front door” connections but apparently didn’t expect they needed to encrypt their internal backend communications. So MUSCULAR could capture massive amounts of data in readable form. Interception and data analysis at its finest. #information #communication #technology

Did you know that there’s a type of fiber cable that sends signals through air? It’s called hollow core fiber and it’s exactly what it sounds like. In a normal fiber optic cable, the signals are sent as light through glass. But when you send light through glass it only travels at about two thirds the speed of light in a vacuum. Enter: Hollow Core Fiber Instead of glass, these fibers are hollow. Light travels through air - which means it gets a lot closer to the actual speed of light. This gives you up to 50% lower latency and a major bump in speed for data transmission. Companies like BT and Microsoft are already testing it: → AI clusters → Edge networks → Financial trading The technology is still developing, right now it’s more expensive and harder to manufacture .
