When pruning a fig tree, focus on removing four types of branches:
🌿Branches growing inward toward the trunk.
These block sunlight from reaching the centre of the canopy. Light penetration is essential for strong growth and good fruit development.
🌿Branches that cross, rub, or bend against each other.
They create wounds, restrict airflow, and increase the risk of disease.
🌿Very tall vertical branches.
These shoots often divert energy away from fruiting and make harvesting difficult. Removing them helps redirect energy where it matters.
🌿Overly long branches.
Shortening long branches encourages balanced growth and stimulates new lateral shoots, which become future fruiting points.
Pruning helps the tree focus its energy on productive growth rather than excess wood. The result is a healthier structure, better air circulation, easier harvesting, and often fewer but larger and sweeter figs.
Prune moderately, cut just before an outward-facing bud, and avoid heavy pruning every year. Timing and balance are key.
