ASThe Sun and the Shadow
The neighborhood called them "The Golden Pair." Cooper, a massive, goofy Golden Retriever, and Rusty, a raggedy orange tabby who lived at the house next door. They spent their afternoons in the driveway, Cooper snoozing in the grass and Rusty perched on his flank like a tiny, vibrating orange king.
It happened on a Tuesday afternoon. A ball—the bright blue one Cooper loved—rolled into the street. Cooper, governed more by instinct than caution, leaped after it.
The screech of tires was high and sharp, like a scream. Rusty saw the silver sedan before Cooper did. In a flash of orange fur, the cat launched himself from the sidewalk, not to chase the ball, but to swat at Cooper’s ear—his way of telling the big dog to move.
The impact was a dull thud. Both were thrown into the soft grass of the curb.
The Aftermath
The street went silent. The driver stopped, hands shaking, as the neighbors rushed out. In the grass, the two were inseparable even in pain:
Cooper lay on his side, his breathing shallow, his golden coat stained with dust.
Rusty was tucked against Cooper’s chest, his front paw resting on the dog’s snout, refusing to leave his side despite his own limp.
The local vet worked through the night. It was a long road of casts, bandages, and "cone of shame" fashion choices. Cooper had a broken leg; Rusty had a fractured hip and a clipped ear.
A Quiet Recovery
Weeks later, the driveway looked a little different. There were no high-speed chases for blue balls. Instead, Cooper lay on a thick orthopedic bed under the porch. Rusty, encased in a small kitty-wrap, was curled up exactly where he always was: tucked into the warmth of Cooper’s golden fur.
They were a bit slower, and a bit more scarred, but they were together. The sun still hit the driveway just right, warming the orange cat and the golden dog as they slept—two survivors who refused to let go.

ALYou should try smoking a flank steak vs grilling it! The results are wild!! 🔥
Years ago I tried this for the first time, and now it’s my go to!!
Marinade ingredients
¾ cup olive oil extra virgin (don’t skip this!)
½ cup soy sauce
2 tbsp red wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar
1 medium lime juiced
¼ cup brown sugar
2 tbsp dijon mustard
1.5 tbsp garlic powder
½ tsp black pepper ground
Flank steak - @snakeriverfarms
Avoid adding extra salt in the marinade unless you use low sodium soy sauce, then you can add 1tbsp of salt to the mix.
Let the steak marinate for 30-60 minutes. Then take it out, wipe off the exceas marinade, and get it on the smoker at 225F
Let it cook until the internal hits 125, then sear however you prefer!
Let it rest, then slice against the grain and enjoy an incredible steak for wraps, tacos, or just good on its own!
