Found almost exclusively in Australian waters, the flatback turtle is one of the Great Barrier Reef’s true locals 🐢💙 This is a rare and special encounter! 😍 Guests aboard Ocean Safari @oceansafaricapetrib sighted this beauty on tour to Mackay Reef, watching as it surfaced calmly in crystal clear water. Seeing one this relaxed at the surface is rare. We just released a Southeast Asian Softshell Turtle — a unique freshwater species known for its flat, leathery shell and snorkel-like nose! 🐢🌿 Softshell turtles are strong swimmers and spend most of their time in the rivers. Sadly, their populations are declining due to habitat loss and overharvesting of their meat. We received the turtle from a local restaurant owner. The leatherback sea turtle is the largest turtle in the world, growing to more than 6.5 feet (two meters) in length and weighing up to 2,000 pounds (900 kilograms). They are the only species of sea turtle that lack scales and a hard shell. They are named for their tough rubbery skin and have existed in their current form since the age of the dinosaurs. Where do They Live? Leatherbacks occur in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. Nesting beaches are primarily located in tropical latitudes around the world. Globally, the largest remaining nesting aggregations are found in Trinidad and Tobago, West-Indies (Northwest Atlantic) and Gabon, Africa (Southeast Atlantic). Nesting in the United States usually occurs in Florida, Puerto Rico and St. Croix (U.S. Virgin Islands). They lay typically less than 100 eggs each time. Leatherbacks are also the Deepest-Diving Turtle, Capable of reaching depths of close to 4,000 feet (1.200m). 🎥 by @mikesudi16 @karibinyaralas

This is a rare sighting worth celebrating! ⁣ ⁣ @gbrmarinepark Eye on the Reef Program Manager Chris Jones, aka Fluffy, was stoked about this recent sighting of a flatback turtle on the Eye on the Reef sightings network.⁣ ⁣ The footage was captured by Brandon at @oceansafaricapetrib at Cape Tribulation and is pretty spectacular as it's the first underwater footage of a Flatback turtle submitted to the program. ⁣ ⁣ Since 1980, we’ve been committed to conserving Flatback turtles through long-term monitoring of this critical nesting site. They only nest in Australian waters feeding on soft corals, sea pens and jellyfish often in the inter-reefal area (the waters between the Reef and the shore). This is why it’s important when travelling through these areas to be on the look out and make sure you go slow for those below.⁣ ⁣ The Eye on the Reef sightings network allows visitors to the Reef to help contribute to its protection by submitting valuable data about wildlife, reef health, and incidents out on the water. Anyone can get involved by downloading the free Eye on the Reef app and registering for the sightings network.

Just another reason why we love the Great Barrier Reef! 🐢 Recetly, out at Mackay Reef, the crew at @oceansafaricapetrib came across something pretty special - a flatback turtle chilling out, having a little sunbake on the surface! Flatbacks are one of the most unique marine turtles in the world. Unlike green or hawksbill turtles that migrate across entire oceans, flatbacks are true Aussies - found almost exclusively in Australian waters. They don’t roam the globe… they call this place home, and we don't blame them. Seeing one this relaxed at the surface is rare. Crew member Kiyana quietly slipped in and captured this incredible moment - an ancient mariner resting on the surface, with a few curious pilot fish hanging around for the ride (and maybe a free feed). This incredible sighting was loaded into the Eye on the Reef app - a program ran by the @gbrmarinepark to monitor reef health, and the incredible biodiversity of the Great Barrier Reef. These sightings help guide management and science throughout the World Heritage Area!
