One of the reasons that I like the Fluent Pet Connect system is that it logs button presses. Even if I weren't doing social media, I would record everything that Elsie does because of moments like this. I was so fixated on the fact that that button wasn't working that I completely missed the fact that Elsie had found the word PLAY on a different button board. I think this is Elsie's only button press on Roving's board, but I'm not certain because her board uses the first generation buttons and so none of the button presses log. After this we did let Roving upstairs and she and Elsie didn't play, but they did cohabitate. During our time together there was one time when it looked like they attempted to do some consensual chasing, but Guppy wanted to get involved and that was too much. This is the first time I've seen a button cat use a board that they've never encountered. It reminded me of when @puppyparkerposey visited us and started using Elsie's board correctly. Sascha, her human, was the one who explained what she thinks is happening. I find it fascinating that Roving was clearly experimenting, but not approaching that experimentation in a way that seemed systemic to me. Until I factor in smells, and then you can see more of a pattern in her choices. But... It's one cat, one time. For science, there needs to be a controlled experiment. Someday, I hope there will be. For now, I'm content to provide anecdotal examples that a scientist can use as the basis of an experiment. Meanwhile, Jes keeps talking about needing to upgrade @rovingreacts buttons because the Fluent Pet Connect System's sound quality is so good by comparison. Cats Jake and Finn use buttons to communicate, which you’d think would be enough awesomeness for 2 fluff balls, but no. Jake’s decided she’s a service cat, and she’s started alerting Mom when her blood sugar is falling. 😳 Communication is always a work in progress, and since Jake is adamant she wants to be able to tell me when I’m about to be sick, we’re working on learning the word “sugar” for alerts. In the meantime she uses pretty much every food button she has to let me know 😅 Finn and Jake are up to 183 word buttons now, and we add new ones pretty often - whenever they ask for a new word for something (they have a “buttonword” button to ask for new words) or if a new situation comes up like this one. At this point of our button journey, I’m mostly just along for the ride. Come along with us if you’re curious to see where we go next. Skeptics of the dogs using buttons to talk often say, “ they are just pressing any random button to get attention.” One piece of evidence that supports that they actually DO intentionally select their buttons is the repeated pressing of the same word! In this clip, you can see Mila press the same button twice, before I even hear her, and then a 3rd time after I ask her what she said! Not only is communicating with her, like this, really flipping cool, it’s also really beneficial for her quality of life. She’s able to express her wants and needs so directly.
