After what has been an incredibly scary and very difficult couple of weeks in hospital having multiple CT scans, MRIs, X-rays, blood tests, lumbar punctures and every kind of test you could imagine, I have just been diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) As well as Trigeminal Neuralgia that I was diagnosed with earlier this year. FND is a condition that affects the way the brain and nervous system work, leading to a range of neurological symptoms such as limb weakness, paralysis, seizures, walking difficulties, spasms, sensory issues, cognitive problems and more. The specific cause for FND is unknown but one of the main triggers is stress, trauma & anxiety. And while there is no cure, it is treatable providing you adapt your life as much as possible to manage it. I guess the stress and trauma of this last year and everything we’ve went through has finally caught up with me and my body and it’s now decided to make me physically stop, process and heal from everything properly. So that’s my plan 🙂, as you can see I’ve a good bit to go on the healing front, going from walking in to hospital with a very bad headache & severe facial pain, to losing function in both legs and then trying to walk again using a zimmer frame. It’s quite a lot to wrap your head around. So I need to drastically adapt things in my life right now and for the future to reduce the severity of the symptoms in any future flare ups. But rest assured, I will be cared for like a queen every single day until I fully recover from this episode ❤️ A special mention of thanks must go out to all of the doctors, specialists, nurses & staff of the South West Acute Hospital. The care and first class treatment I’ve had since I arrived has been absolutely amazing and I am so thankful to all of you. With all of that said, I’m going to sign off and take time out from everything for a while to concentrate on recovering fully. In the meantime I’d really appreciate all of your prayers & I’ll soak up this time with my beautiful family and be grateful for every day 🙏🏼 sending you all lots of love, I’ll be back soon L ❤️ xx

Choose kindness (this includes how you treat yourself, darling). Thank you Beth for always taking really good care of me when I come to get my hair done💕💇‍♀️ Also, coffee I was drinking at the start was decaf as we know what caffeine does to our nervous system! 🚀🫨 #chronicillness #salon #disability #fnd #kindness

What were your symptoms labelled as before you got your chronic illness diagnosis? Did you face medical gaslighting? We need more awareness on chronic illnesses rather than being invalidated and getting wrong mental health diagnosis, called crazy and attention seeking when you have a gut feeling that something is seriously wrong, passed around from professional to professional, begging for someone to help you so that people don't getting so ill that they end up in a flare up that takes a lot of time and patience to get yourself out of. But keep advocating yourself, when you know in your gut that something is wrong, don't give up, it took me 6 years to get the diagnoses, a lot of gaslighting from medical professionals but I'm finally getting the help and support that I need with a consultant who validates me. Yes, you can have mental illnesses alongside your chronic illnesses, it's very common as being chronically ill can cause a lot of anxiety and depression but that doesn't mean that your mental illnesses are causing the symptoms of your chronic illnesses. Yes they do affect eachother but they are still separate. Keep fighting to get the diagnosis and help you need! #chronicillness #chronicallyill #fnd #functionalneurologicaldisorder #fibro #chronicfatigue #chronicpain #seizures #wheelchairuser #disabled What did your symptoms get labelled as before you got your chronic illness diagnosis?

FND Hot Take: Assistive devices improve quality of life and should be used in FND treatment! Far too often, we hear from folks that they were told not to use assistive devices. They were told it would “make their symptoms worse” or that it would make them “rely on their devices.” When in reality, assistive devices help improve quality of life. Assistive devices allow clients to: - Achieve their functional goals - Maximize independence - Allow for energy management skills Clinicians, your clients can use assistive devices AND work on mobility goals - it isn’t one or the other. We recommend assistive devices all the time for other neurological conditions, to quote Professor Jon Stone - let’s stop being weird when it comes to FND! ⭐️ We made it. It wasn’t easy — not even close. For years I was told I was “fine,” told to toughen up, to push everything down, to pretend nothing was wrong. But inside, I was fighting a battle no one could see. The trauma, the fear, the exhaustion… it all sat on my shoulders for so long. Learning to walk again wasn’t just physical — it meant facing the same kind of situation that once broke me. Every part of me wanted to run, to hide, to disappear. But I didn’t. I stayed. I tried. And slowly… painfully slowly… things began to change. Now, three years after that first video, I can walk. I can breathe. I can say “I am not fine” when I’m not, and I no longer force myself to swallow my feelings just to keep going. I’m finally able to enjoy life again — and that joy feels earned. Hard-won. Real. And I’m proud. So proud. Because after everything, I’m still here. And I made it. #medicaltrauma #medicalgaslighting #disability #amputee #disabilityawareness #crps #fnd #chronicillness #recovery #traumarecovery #mentalhealth @exposingpainprograms

Functional Neurological Disorder: regaining control over voluntary movements One of Ellie’s most persistent FND symptoms is aggressive involuntary muscle responses (ie kicking out uncontrollably, which in the past has left her with some injuries) primarily in her lower body, which makes standings and walking independently incredibly hard and often unsafe. Ellie and Luke have worked extensively to understand some of the patterns and triggers that underlie Ellie’s FND. One of the key triggers appears to be when Ellie’s toes are lifted (and sometimes when they make contact with the floor) which leads her body into aggressive jerks, kicking and stamping. The power behind these movements is beyond what Ellie can create voluntarily. It is vital for Ellies’ body not to respond in this way for her to walk. The brain receives a lot of information from the feet when they touch the ground, without this it’s hard for her to know where she is in space, where to place her feet, if she’s landing correctly etc. Luke and Ellie start to work on changing these patterns - at first seated, then when this is repeatable they can move to standing. Previously this would cause Ellie to have a seizure. You can see during this process her body automatically ‘fights back’ but they work together to gain control over this response. Watching the short clips in this video makes it look simple — this is a lot of work, investigation and practice (including work from previous intensives and at home)! A day later Ellie is able to stand with full control, and even move onto walking! FND rehab is all about individualisation to the person in front of you and finding the right level of challenge that forces the nervous system to adapt and change… …without aggravating symptoms significantly We know that there are autonomic changes in FND and so pushing too hard before you’ve earned the right to can reaffirm a more sympathetic (fight or flight) dominant state that may hinder not help progress But essentially - that means FND rehab is no different to non-FND rehab 🔑 The principles of creating adaptation are all the same FND often just requires a little extra problem solving to figure out effective entry points and progressions Excited to see Hannah progress with this exercise and her wider goals over the coming week 🚀 @progressphysioclinic #fnd #fndhope #neubie #physiotherapy #rehabilitation
