CARupea Fortress, Romania
Rupea Fortress, perched atop a basalt hill in central Romania, is one of the country’s oldest and most striking fortifications. Its origins date back to the 13th century, built on the site of a Dacian citadel named Ramidava. Initially constructed as a refuge for locals during invasions, it expanded over centuries to include three concentric enclosures. In the 14th century, the fortress became a significant trade and military hub, guarding the routes connecting Transylvania to the surrounding regions. By the 18th century, it fell into disrepair after being abandoned following a devastating storm. The fortress lay in ruins for centuries until extensive restoration began in the early 2000s. Today, Rupea Fortress is a popular tourist destination, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Its towers, walls, and interior structures vividly depict medieval life. Legend says the fortress once hid treasures and secrets of Transylvanian nobility. It stands as a testament to the resilience and rich history of the region.

BYThe Porta Aurea (the Golden Gate / Turkish Altın Kapı) was the main gate of the Eastern Roman emperors in Constantinople, the rulers used this gate mainly when they were on their way to a battle or returning triumphantly from a war. Once there were gilded bronze gates and gilded bronze statues attached to the gate, but they were stolen from there during the Fourth Crusade and replaced with ordinary bronze gates without gilding. In their heyday, when emperors returned successfully from battle, they passed through the middle of the three gates and were greeted by the cheering people who threw flowers in the ruler's path and shouted three times holy holy holy. After the conquest of Constantinople in 1453, the gate continued to be used but in a different form now it was only the entrance gate to the Yedikule fortress and the gates were partially walled up as you see them today. But even today it is still very beautiful to look at, the white marble blocks still shining beautifully in the sun.
