This was a commissioned piece for @ellismalou who loves the idea of turning the trash on Sydney’s beaches into art. The video starts with our most polluted beach which is right next to Sydney Airport, and that’s where I get lots of my art supplies, but the plastic rubbish used for this piece also comes from several Manly and Mosman beaches where plastic washes ashore when the wind blows in particular directions. (I should clarify that our beaches aren’t always covered in rubbish! Often my scavenging was a race to grab stuff before Sydney Harbour park employees could rake it up and take it away!) Since this was a commission, I consulted every step of the way as we worked on the colour scheme. Malou wanted colours that evoked her husband’s homeland of Ireland, so lots of green for the hills and blue for the sea, with contrasting pops of red, pink, purple and yellow. I know a lot of artists gatekeep their techniques because they don’t want to encourage copycats, and I totally respect that, but when it comes to art made from trash, I hope to encourage others to do the same, so I decided to create a tutorial to show you every step of the way! A couple notes. First, I have found it hard to achieve a stable bond when glueing plastic to plastic, so I melt holes in the bottle caps with a soldering iron so I can screw them to a board for art that will last. (If you just screw plastic directly to the board without first making holes, it can shatter.) Use better protective gear than I did because I burned myself a few times! I do have to use glue for the pieces that cover the screw heads. I use Gorilla Glue. Be sure to dab water on the pieces to be glued because that strengthens the bond. I bought it because of the little ridges on the bottom and the circle in the square…no matter how I print it, randomly or overlapping as I did here it always makes a great print!
