Jimmy Lai is spending his 77th birthday behind bars today, simply for doing his job as a journalist. @appledailytw’s founder has already been sentenced to five years and nine months in prison on trumped-up fraud charges and has served a 20-month sentence for his participation in “unauthorised” pro-democracy protests. Lai faces two charges under the National Security Law (NSL), for which he could be sentenced to life imprisonment. The #HongKong authorities’ tactics are clear: hope the world will forget about Jimmy Lai. But we will not forget, and we must continue to fight for his release and for the values of press freedom that he has stood for his entire life. The only video that is not about Ukraine claims that RSF lost its legal case against the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). In reality, the proceedings are still ongoing. This false and misleading content — which uses the credible reputation of RSF to spread untrue information — illustrates not only the dangers of Russian disinformation but the consequences of the inaction of platforms like X, how ineffective the current fight against informational interference is, and how dangerous the news media’s passivity in the face of these attacks can be. The JTI certification consists of three stages: evaluating the outlet itself; publishing a transparency report, so the outlet can achieve certification if it undergoes an audit conducted by a trusted third party. As the rampant spread of disinformation and the acceleration of unregulated artificial intelligence increase, the JTI is quickly becoming an essential tool for strengthening trust between media outlets and their audiences. It is well past time to restore a virtuous cycle favoring quality journalism based on facts, safeguards for a democracy’s public debate. We were present at the hearing to support the journalist in this symbolic case of the regime's now unbridled attack on press freedom and the right to information. She is facing three separate charges: criminal prosecution for “attacking a police officer” after a symbolic slap, and two administrative proceedings for “insulting and resisting the police” and for “altering the appearance of a building” after sticking a protest sticker on it. This hearing once again highlighted the lack of substance in this case. The defense pointed to serious procedural irregularities, including political statements that have no place in an ongoing trial. Figure de renom, cofondatrice de médias indépendants, Mzia Amaghlobeli est injustement détenue en détention provisoire depuis son arrestation le 12 janvier 2025. Nous étions présente à l’audience pour soutenir la journaliste dans cette affaire symbolique de l’attaque désormais débridée du régime contre la liberté de la presse et le droit à l’information. Elle est poursuivie dans trois procédures distinctes : une poursuite pénale pour “attentat contre un policier” à la suite d’une gifle symbolique, ainsi que deux procédures administratives pour “insulte et résistance à la police” et pour “altération de l’apparence d’un bâtiment”, après avoir collé un autocollant de protestation. Cette audience a une nouvelle fois mis en évidence l’absence de fondement dans cette affaire. La défense a pointé de graves irrégularités procédurales, notamment des déclarations à caractère politique qui n’ont pas leur place dans un procès en cours. We must not show weakness when they try to bypass the laws of democratic societies. Their obvious unwillingness to prevent the propagation of false, misleading and propagandistic content and their insufficient cooperation with national regulators threatens information reliability and the stability of democracies. #Brazil's Supreme Court made a big decision: digital platforms, such as social media companies, must take more responsibility for the content they host.
