Stop doing intense workouts before it completely destroys your immune system. If you have an autoimmune disease, this isn’t dramatic…it’s physiology. Intense workouts (HIIT, bootcamp, CrossFit, long hard runs) place a huge demand on the body. They spike cortisol, adrenaline, and inflammatory markers. For a healthy, resilient system, that stress is temporary. But autoimmune bodies are different. Your immune system is already on high alert. Your nervous system is often stuck in fight-or-flight. Your stress response is usually overworked and under-recovered. When you add intense exercise on top of that, the body doesn’t interpret it as “healthy stress.” It interprets it as threat. That can look like: • Crushing fatigue 1–3 days later • Joint pain or lingering soreness • Poor sleep • Digestive issues • Anxiety or mood swings • “Random” flares that don’t feel random at all This doesn’t mean movement is bad. It means the wrong intensity becomes inflammatory instead of healing. Healing autoimmune disease requires: • Nervous system regulation • Lower baseline inflammation • Proper recovery • A sense of safety in the body Chronic high-intensity workouts can keep the body locked in survival mode, making it harder to repair, regulate immunity, and truly heal. What does support autoimmune healing? • Walking (especially outdoors) • Gentle to moderate strength training • Pilates or yoga • Zone 2 cardio • Mobility and fascia work • Shorter workouts with more recovery 👉 Exercise should leave you feeling better in your body, not just accomplished in your mind. In my work as a Physical Therapist Assistant and Autoimmune Health Coach, I’ve seen how often the body just needs less intensity…not more discipline. If your workouts are draining you, triggering symptoms, or leading to flares, they’re not medicine. They’re another stressor. Listening to your body isn’t weakness. It’s wisdom. One of the most important things we focus on is the environment around the cells—because when you change the terrain, you can change how the body responds. Many cancer cells have impaired energy metabolism, and compared to healthy cells, they often don’t handle oxygen the same way. That’s why increasing oxygen availability can be a powerful supportive strategy. This is a key reason we use hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) with many of our cancer patients. In the chamber, we increase the amount of oxygen your body can carry and deliver into tissues—essentially “forcing oxygen in” to areas that may be under-oxygenated. Our goal is twofold: support healthier tissue that’s struggling (cells that are borderline can sometimes recover when they’re properly oxygenated), and create conditions that may be harder for injured cancer cells to tolerate.
