Impatience is the biggest killer of brands. And the fact of the matter is that it's been a systemic issue that has gotten increasingly worse over the past 15 years. Growth hacking started to become popular in 2007 with Tim Ferriss' book "The 4-Hour Workweek". It was a great read that gave people with dreams of escaping the 9-5 with some tangible things they could try. While at first it was focused on setting up passive income schemes by hacking the commercial environment that was shifting beneath our feet, it evolved into hacking cooking, fitness, the mind, and so forth. I was a consumer of that type of content, which I believe appealed to a younger cohort coming out of university in and around 2014. It felt like I could "accelerate" my learning - in the end of the day, Tim was a "professional learner" (as he defined himself). It eventually spilled over into hacking learning languages with Gabriel Wyner's "Fluent Forever" method, and up to this point everything seemed ok. Then it took a turn. Performance marketers latched on to this idea of hacking and spun it into promises that were totally unsustainable. For every company that managed to "hack" their growth in the short-term, there were 1,000s that spun their wheels and wasted precious brand-building years off their trajectories. Performance marketing promised fast results, minimal spend, and idyllic measurement. Fast-forward to the late 2010s, after a decade of chasing a fool's errand, publications like "How Brands Grow" and "The Long and The Short of It" started to breakthrough into the mainstream and we finally begun to get real about marketing effectiveness once again. All of this to say: if someone is promising to "hack growth" for you, be extremely skeptical of it. Rarely will that ever lead you anywhere worth building upon. Hard things take time. And growing a brand is one of the hardest thing your company will ever engage in.
