Every year, before the onset of heavy snowfall, Gaddi men move with their sheep and goats to lower regions, crossing high-altitude passes to ensure the survival of their livestock. This migration often lasts several months. While this movement is economic in nature, it has deep emotional and social consequences. Families, partners, and communities are temporarily separated, and the uncertainty of harsh weather, difficult terrain, and limited resources remains a constant concern. Over generations, this recurring separation has become an integral part of Gaddi collective memory. Himachal’s folk traditions have preserved these experiences through music and oral narratives. One such representation is found in a folk composition by noted Himachali folk singer Sunil Rana, which presents a lyrical dialogue between a woman and her partner preparing to cross the mountains. The lyrics reflect practical anxieties related to snow-covered passes, changing weather conditions, shelter, and food availability. The man’s response highlights the economic necessity of migration, explaining that sustenance is more accessible in the regions beyond the Dhauladhar, where climatic conditions allow food cultivation. . *Kuchh Saelariyaan, Kuchh Peelariyaan: a popular folk ditty from the villages of Kangra, Chamba and Jammu in the Western Himalayas* One of the recurrent pleasures of researching and performing folk music lies in its constant sense of discovery. Every possible event, action and episode has a song or two (or three or many) attached to it, so the list is essentially endless. I would assume this to be the case for pan-India, and most definitely for the Himachal Himalayas, where music flows in and through every possible entity – from meandering rivers to undulating mountains. It is also a form of recording ubiquitous occurrences. This song, whose title translates into ‘Some Green Bangles, Some Yellow Ones’ describes the excitement and pleas of a married village woman to her husband upon the appearance of a bangle-seller. She insists him to buy a few green (saelariyan) and yellow (peelariyan) bangles, but the man keeps teasing and diverting her attention, eventually promising to take her to a bigger place (Jammu) for buying them. At the end however, the woman relinquishes her wish for the adornments, and says that what matters the most is their love and not the material object. A simple song, it can be interpreted in many ways. It obviously speaks of a time when women weren’t economically independent, and even men had limited resources at their disposal. (Of course, there remains the possibility of the husband being a complete miser as well 😅) Seen here are my mother, the folk artist Anita Pandey from Kangra, and Seema ‘didi’, the caretaker of our maternal ancestral home in the Himalayas. The latter belongs to the Gaddi community from Chamba, and given the cultural ecosystem of friendship and mutual reliance between the pastoralists of Chamba and the agriculturists of Kangra, her ancestors have known my maternal grandparents for generations. The Gaddi community is a culturally rich and diverse group of people that live in the Himalayan mountain ranges of India. Their traditions and culture add vibrant colors to the beautiful state of Himachal Pradesh. In this article, we will explore the history, lifestyle, and culture of the Gaddi community. History: The Gaddi community has a long and complex history. Their origin goes back to Hindus who took refuge in the western Himalayan mountain ranges to protect themselves from invasions, war, and religious persecutions in the plains (Punjab) during and pre-Moghul period. It has been a long journey since the time of their historical migration from Central Asia, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Western Punjab, and some other parts of the country to the remote mountains. They came to rule, capture the land (Kshetras), establish Monasteries (Goasthas) in ancient times, in search of peace in the middle historical period, and escape the persecution and bigotry practiced by the then Mughal rules. Lifestyle: The Gaddi community, known for their semi-pastoral lifestyle, has become a tribe by circumstance and not due to any particular natural calamity. They are called a tribe to uplift their social and economic conditions due to the hardship faced in their living conditions. The term Gaddi is generic and includes the Brahmins, the Rajputs, the Thakurs, the Khatris, and many more. Due to the hilly terrain, there is less agricultural land, so the Gaddis have adopted the main occupation of rearing sheep and goats in the surrounding green, wild pastures. Heavy snowfall in winters results in the majority of these people migrating with their flocks of sheep and goats to the lower hills in the districts Kangra,Chamba,Mandi,Bilaspur and Hamirpur in Himachal Pradesh and Gurdaspur,Hoshiarpur in Punjab, in search of pastures. Life is simple but tough, relying on livestock for milk, wool, and trade. Most daily work involves grazing animals, collecting fodder, and managing herds. 3. Dress and Culture Gaddis wear warm woolen clothes made from their sheep's wool, often hand-spun. The men are seen with Cholas (long coats) and woolen caps, while women wear bright shawls and silver jewelry.
