🔎 Want to become a gemmologist? Use of microscope to identify inclusions in natural and synthetic samples! This is a part of our Basic Gemmology Course! The aim is to offer participants a broad introduction to gemmology by examining coloured gemstones, diamonds and pearls. Basic gemmological techniques will be learned in order to identify gemstones and their simulants. Students will spend a lot of time working practically on gemstones from the large SSEF collection. This course, taught by leading gemmologists, is designed in two parts: theory and hands-on training using gemmological instruments and samples from a large stones collection for study. Small groups guarantee intensive training and a dynamic dialogue. Each participant will receive exhaustive course notes. Garnet or Tourmaline?! I need to be able to identify this gemstone quickly while I’m sourcing gemstones in India for goldsmiths, jewellers and gem enthusiasts 💎 I’m Marie, I’m a Gemmologist and I travel all over the world buying gemstones. I can’t take the usual Gemmological equipment with me because most of it is too big and a lot of it contains unusual chemicals. I have a small tool kit that I take with me that contains a few travel tools but the most important thing is my experience and my qualification because that has equipped me with lots of gemmy knowledge. This little tool is called a Polariscope. It uses two polarising filters to determine whether the gemstone is doubly or singly refractive. In this situation, I’m trying to determine whether these are garnet or tourmaline. As a Gemmologist, I know that garnet is singly refractive and that tourmaline is doubly refractive. Using the polariscope is going to give me a quick, easy identification of what this material is and its behaviour tells me… it’s Garnet.
