The Loupe + Camera trick nobody is talking about! Place your loupe over your phone’s front camera – no tripod, no stand, no bulky setup needed. It’s like carrying a microscope in your pocket. Perfect for jewellery trade shows when you need to travel light but still want to capture gemstone details like a pro 💎 Did you know this trick? If you want to learn more about the world-famous Weinschenk loupe by KRÜSS (yes, the one displayed at the Gübelin Museum!) comment LINK and I’ll send all the details straight to your DM UPDATE: The famous Weinschenk loupe is no longer for sale and has become a collectors piece. 💎Need a Trapiche Emerald in your Collection? I’ve got you covered!💎 I just added several INCREDIBLE Trapiche emeralds to my online store. Just check first link in bio for a link! 📚Wait..so how is this six-rayed pattern formed? The trapiche emerald’s famous star pattern is the result of dark inclusions (usually carbon or shale) that pass through the entire stone. These inclusions get trapped between the growth sectors of the emerald’s hexagonal crystal structure when this crystal was forming. Trapiche emeralds are typically found in Colombian mines such as the Muzo Mine or Peñas Blancas. #gemstone #emerald #jewelry

Green Diamonds get their color through Alpha and Beta Rays as a result of exposure to sources of radioactivity over millions of years while they formed in kimberlite pipes deep below the Earth’s crust. Radiation exposure after a diamond has already formed - where erosion caused for a stone to be washed away to an alluvial deposit near a source of radioactivity - can also cause a diamond to gain a green color. The length of a diamond’s exposure to the radiation (as well as if the stone was exposed to both Alpha and Beta radiation or only one) will dictate the saturation and depth of color that diamond has. These diamonds are known to often have only a thin skin of color to them (especially those only exposed to Alpha, which is why they require a mastery of cutting and faceting to help amplify their color and even the saturation throughout to achieve “Natural Fancy Color” grades. An enigma of the gemological world, appraising these diamonds can be difficult even for major gem labs as treated Green Diamonds go through the same process to gain their color as natural ones do; irradiation. While advances in gemmology have helped to discover some tell-tale identifiers for treated stones, there are many Fancy Green and Blue Diamonds that will receive an “Undetermined” Color Origin classifications if labs cannot determine that a stone’s color is 100% Natural. We’re fortunate to have this natural 0.46ct VS2 Fancy Vivid Green Oval Brilliant listed in our collection of natural Fancy Color Diamonds, comment below or DM for direct link and more info misfitdiamonds #green #brucebanner #greendiamond

Beryl is a mineral group containing popular varieties such as emerald, aquamarine, morganite and yellow or golden beryl (sometimes called heliodor). The latter three gems are sometimes found as large crystals, such as the ones seen here. Heliodor, which ranges in color from slightly greenish yellow to orangy yellow is the gemstone on the left in the shot of the crystals together, and on the right is an aquamarine, which ranges in color from blue to green-blue. While emerald is colored by chromium, vanadium, and iron, and morganite is colored by manganese, both heliodor and aquamarine are colored by iron impurities. Courtesy: @rocksforthespirit

Cutting a glowing ☢️ Radioactive Gemstone into a Superman Shield Shape! Steve Moriarty discusses the characteristics of Hyalite opal from Zacatecas, Mexico. This extraordinary gemstone not only fluoresces under ultraviolet light, but under natural sunlight as well! Watch as he facets this rare gemstone into a 7.27 carat gem. The UV activator in this material is Uranium, so while there are only trace elements present, it is still slightly radioactive. (Just above background levels) That being said, GEM-A, the gemmological association of Great Britain, noted in their journal of gemmology that from their studies, the level of radiation being emitted should not be harmful to a cutter or wearer of this opal. While they did conclude this, we still took precautions when cutting and do suggest not wearing it on a daily basis. This material was discovered in 2014 and the source has since stopped producing and we haven’t seen much new material in the past 4-5 years. Spinel is a captivating gemstone available in a stunning array of colors, including red, pink, purple, orange, blue, and black. While each shade has its own charm, some are particularly sought after. Here is just a small selection. ✔️ Red Spinel Red spinel owes its intense color to traces of chromium in its crystal structure. This same element enhances its vivid red glow, similar to the fluorescence seen in high-quality rubies. ✔️ Pink Spinel From vibrant pink hues to delicate pastel tones, pink spinel is loved for its soft yet striking brilliance. ✔️ Blue Spinel & Cobalt-Blue Spinel Highly valued in the trade, blue spinel gets its colour from traces of cobalt, iron, or a combination of both. However, not all blue spinels are equal! Vivid cobalt-blue spinels are much rarer and therefore more valuable. Identifying them requires a detailed spectral analysis to determine which element dominates their color. ✔️ Orange Spinel Its warm, fiery hue is the result of a unique combination of vanadium and chromium, creating a truly distinctive shade. ✔️ Pastel Spinels Beyond deep, rich tones, spinel also comes in delicate pastel shades, created by subtle variations in trace element chemistry. ✔️ Grey Spinel Once overlooked, grey spinel is now gaining popularity, especially in men’s jewellery. Its colour is mainly due to iron content. ✔️ Color-Change Spinel Some spinels possess a mesmerizing property: they shift color depending on the light! Appearing blue in daylight, they transform into a beautiful purple under incandescent light—a true marvel of nature. Which spinel colour is your favourite? Wow! Incredible amethyst specimens have been found at Jackson Crossroads, Wilkes Co., Georgia, USA, but this piece was found very close by at Tignall, amazingly by a couple who went digging over the weekend in the 1970s, and since never worked again in any formal way. What a weekend (!), a group of supremely lustrous prismatic crystals, some doubly terminated with subtle zoning and concentration of colour at the tips. The faces pristine and sharp, with an exceptional clarity and lustre, all sitting on matrix with a beautiful overall quality and intensity of colour that defines the districts occurrences. A 1966 Georgia Mining survey bulletin comments on amethyst gem mining potential, noting several occurrences of crystals scattered around shallow pits, and specimens obtained from small pockets several inches across, bluish-violet to deep purple, mostly unevenly coloured with terminations most intensely coloured. Familiar indeed! Colour in quartz was long debated, with uncertainty remaining until crystals were grown in the laboratory. By adding a little aluminium about 1 in 10,000 Si⁴⁺ atoms will have an Al³⁺ atom in its place. To maintain ‘charge balance’ of the crystal a proton (H⁺) is present in an interstitial site, add some radiation and an electron can be ejected from an oxygen next to the aluminium trapping this proton to form a hydrogen atom. The hydrogen atom does not absorb light, but the resulting [AlO₄]⁴⁻ does and we produce smoky quartz. However, if we do the same with Iron, Fe³⁺ instead of Al³⁺ we get a usual pale-yellow colour centre, but irradiate and voila(!) that [FeO₄]⁴⁻ alongside some probably charge transfer effects absorbs light to give the purple of amethyst. In nature in the right environment a few 10-100 parts per million Fe atoms made their way in quartz and alongside natural irradiation from surrounding rocks the ingredients and mechanism were all in place to produce light absorption for the stunning ‘Royal Purple’ colour.
