LOIn August 1943, during the Sicily Campaign, General George S. Patton Jr. slapped and verbally abused two soldiers: Private Charles Kuhl and Private Paul Bennett—in separate field hospitals, accusing them of "cowardice" when they were actually suffering from malaria and severe shell shock (PTSD).
The incidents caused a massive scandal, leading General Eisenhower to relieve Patton of his command and keep him sidelined as a "decoy" during the D-Day landings.
Desperate to prove his worth and regain his status, Patton was eventually given command of the Third Army in 1944.
He then led them on a historic, lightning-fast "dash" across France, covering more ground and capturing more prisoners in less time than any other Allied army in WW2 - a feat largely fueled by his obsession with redeeming his tarnished reputation.
