Meanwhile, behind the scenes, our small-spotted genet, Kylie, is very intrigued by bubble enrichment! Genets are small predators native to parts of southern Africa. Despite their looks, they aren’t cats, but they ARE feliforms. Feliforms are a suborder of animals that are cat-like, which includes mongoose, hyenas, civets and cats. Genets are largely nocturnal predators, and although they’re mostly carnivores, they’ll occasionally eat plants. The small-spotted genet is not at risk of extinction but a few genet species are threatened by deforestation and overhunting. Small moments like these remind us why we do what we do. This is Genie, our small spotted genet, enjoying a special treat, a piece of chicken and doing it in true genet style: carefully, alert, and always aware of her surroundings. Genets are naturally nocturnal, solitary, and incredibly agile animals. In the wild, they feed on a varied diet that includes insects, small mammals, birds, eggs, and occasionally meat like this. Offering food in a controlled way helps us meet their nutritional needs while also allowing them to express natural feeding behaviours, sniffing, carrying, and choosing a safe spot before eating. Although Genie may look relaxed here, she is still very much a wild animal. Genets are not pets, and their independence and instincts are what make them so special. At Felidae, our goal is to respect, protect, and give a second chance to animals who can no longer survive in the wild. Kismet de Barret is very worried about her boyfriend, the brave Acredite des Genets... She loves him so! Acredite is here on location for 2025, thanks to Les Races Mulassières. He has lost weight and has very deformed teeth. So, the Vet came for a first seance.... It took a long time. Not tranquilised. He is amazing bit Kis was anxious for him. The Vet said his teeth were not like a 14 year old but like a very old donkey. Probably the constant change of guardian and diet ... Or an old problem. He will need another séance but it would have been too much to do it all in one go. Hopefully he will be able to eat a bit better soon. Meanwhile, giving him a soup complément and he prefers grass to hard hay (which I am soaking for him.) They have a huge round bale, free service and long grass at disposition. Kismet has been with him since the end of March. The scan yesterday shows she is pregnant so congratulations to the happy couple! My first born fédon, Kis,is expecting for May 2026 and should be a stunning Heffalump, Universe-Willing. Fingers crossed. They are such a sweet couple.
