We had a LOT of fun this week cooking up an ocean-inspired treasure hunt for the young sailors in our boating family. With twelve kids of four nationalities joining in they were cracking pirate codes, solving sailing riddles, fishing for ‘yellow fin’, learning knots and quizzing nautical flags and of course, chasing mermaids for treasure! As you can guess the adults had a lot of fun too … we like to have any excuse to dig out the costume bag on Freeranger and if there’s a chance for some ocean education at the same time, well, that’s really striking gold! #sailing #genocean #oceaneducation #treasure #familytravels #ocean #kids4sail

👋Meet Alena Kharissova (@alena__khar), a coral restoration innovator who uses 3D-printed materials made from washed up sargassum seaweed to build artificial reef structures, solving two ocean problems at once (@thrasos.3d). 🪸 Alena joined the Ocean Decade Collaborative Centre for Coastal Resilience in their Sustainable Coastal Growth and Resilience course to gain technical research and integrated approaches to coastal resilience challenges. 💡Alena says the most valuable things she got out of the course was the networking with other ECOPs and the lessons on how to use QGIS (a free and open-source tool that gives the power of spatial visualization and decision making to everyone) and the integration of Jupyter Notebook (an open-source product that supports interactive data science and scientific computing across computational languages) into Copernicus marine tools and databases. 🔗 Learn more on our #GenOcean webpage link in bio! 💻 The course was organized by the DCC-CR and OceanTeacher Global Academy, with the support of CMCC Foundation, Cineca, HR Wallingford and the University of Bologna. #GenOcean #EarlyCareerOceanProfessinals #OceanDecade #MarineSkills #ScienceSkills #CapacityBuilding #CareerDevelopment #CoralReefRestoration #ArtificialReefs #ScienceInnovation

Happy World Whale Day! Today we celebrate our marine mammal cousins and think about how we can be better neighbours. I painted this buoy last week as a special commission. On it I have depicted one of the Northern Resident Orcas from A clan, known as Toba (A78). Toba is a young male born to Kelsey (A24) in 2003 and has a distinctive notch in his dorsal. This buoy was found by Victoria resident Rik B. on Island View Beach. Rik spends much of his free time collecting garbage washed up on our beaches. I am very grateful for his work and his buoy donation. Want to do something to honour our marine neighbours?
