The shoebill is an extraordinary-looking bird that lives in vast tropical swamps, reed-filled lakes, and slow-moving riverbanks of Africa, especially in Uganda, South Sudan, Zambia, and Tanzania, where dense vegetation helps it both hide and ambush its prey. It typically stands 110–140 centimeters tall, has a wingspan exceeding two meters, and shows gray-blue plumage; its most striking feature is the enormous, shoe-shaped bill with a hooked tip, perfectly adapted for gripping slippery fish and reptiles. It can remain motionless for long periods, then suddenly strike with a powerful snap of its bill when the right moment comes. A strictly carnivorous species, the shoebill feeds mainly on large fish—especially lungfish—along with frogs, snakes, small reptiles, and occasionally young crocodiles. Around humans it is generally shy and avoids settlements, which makes sightings in the wild rare; however, drainage of wetlands, agricultural expansion, and other human activities have steadily reduced its habitat.
