Basic Principle A gearbox works based on the relationship: Power = Torque × Speed Since power from the engine stays nearly constant, if the gearbox reduces speed, it increases torque. 2. Gear Ratio Torque multiplication depends on the gear ratio. Gear Ratio = Number of teeth on driven gear ÷ Number of teeth on driving gear Example: Driving gear = 10 teeth Driven gear = 40 teeth Gear ratio = 40 ÷ 10 = 4:1 This means: Output speed = ¼ of input speed Output torque = 4× input torque So if engine torque is 100 Nm, the output becomes: 100 × 4 = 400 Nm 3. What Happens Inside a Gearbox Inside a vehicle gearbox: Engine sends torque to the input shaft. Gears with different sizes engage. Larger gears rotate slower.
