La Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) es una herramienta fundamental en el ámbito de la kinesiología y la rehabilitación pediátrica. Clasifica en 5 niveles la función motora gruesa de niños y niñas con parálisis cerebral, según su movilidad y autonomía en la vida diaria. Su principal valor radica en que no mide lo que el niño puede hacer en condiciones ideales, sino lo que realmente hace en su entorno cotidiano, permitiendo una comprensión más funcional y realista. Es una escala validada internacionalmente, confiable y ampliamente utilizada en contextos clínicos y de investigación, lo que facilita la comunicación entre profesionales y la toma de decisiones basadas en evidencia. Independent walking has been one most important factor in children with cerebral palsy. These are some researches supporting it. McCormick et al. (2007), using the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS; Palisano et al. 1997), found that 91% of 33 children who were walking without aids (GMFCS Levels I and II) at around age 12 years were still walking without aids at about age 22. They also found that 96% of 48 children who were using a wheelchair as their primary or only mode of mobility (GMFCS Levels IV and V) at the age 12 years were still wheelchair users at about age 22. Day et al. (2007) made a retrospective study of walking in 7550 adolescents and 5721 young adults. Their graphs show that children with cerebral palsy with mean age 10 years, who walked well alone (GMFCS Levels I and II), had a high likelihood (77–89%) of still doing so over the next 15 years. They also found that 54% of children who walked well but needed some assistance in climbing stairs (GMFCS Level II) stayed the same until age 25. Those who changed were equally likely (23%) ei- ther to decline in walking or to improve in stair climbing. Will he ever walk? ⬇️⬇️ Right now, he’s rated GMFCS Level 4 on the Gross Motor Function Classification System, which means his cerebral palsy is considered more severe and that he likely needs significant support for mobility. Regardless of whether he ever walks or not, all of this therapy is still incredibly beneficial for his body. Our body is meant to bear weight. When kids aren’t weight-bearing, it can lead to things like low bone density, hip and joint problems, muscle tightness, pain, and other long-term complications. Therapy isn’t just about walking. It’s about supporting his body, improving his quality of life, and helping with long-term health and longevity. We were told from doctors 🗣️ If he is able to walk one day, it will likely require a lot from Benji. Any independent walking would likely be limited to short distances, and he would tire easily. 🙏 We will never give up hope on anything. 🤷‍♀️ I can’t say what Benji will or won’t be able to do..ultimately, it’s up to God. #cerebralpalsy #quadriplegic #microcephaly #cerebralpalsyawareness
