Our student worker series concludes with videography work by Matt Hamilton ’25 of Sudbury, Mass. Matt has a keen eye for capturing Bates athletics up close with his 4K camera. With high frame rates and quick cuts, his videos are tailor made for the vertical-first story formats taking over social media. Matt explains his process below. . “As a kid I would never get photos of myself, and I remember the feeling of being left out of events that highlight good athletes or feature only the people who look "presentable.” My goal with photography is to never make anybody feel like that. I try my best to make people realize the beauty that they all hold and that they aren't actually unphotogenic (they've just hired bad photographers ;) The reactions I get when some people tell me, "I can't believe you chose me!" or the satisfaction I get when I see a photo that I took become an Instagram profile picture or post (properly credited, of course) makes it all worth it. The Instagram algorithm is changing constantly, but I consider myself fluent and am always trying to learn more about which content does well every day. My dream job is to help take companies into this digital world and modernize businesses that are missing this absolutely massive audience that can be found on social media! I would also love being a full-time photographer but it is hard to make a living off of solely that. Since Bates does not have a photography major, I am relying on experience to look for jobs, so covering Bates athletics and other events for the Bates Communications Office has been helpful.” #batescollege #reels #studentphotographer #photography #videography #batesathletics #gobates

Male Bobcat of the Week- Marrich Somridhivej ‘26 @batesswimanddive (joined by Tim Johnson ‘27 & Nate Oppenheim ‘28) Somridhivej, named NESCAC swimmer of the year, won two individual events and was part of three Bobcats winning relays at the NESCAC Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships. Somridhivej set NESCAC and NESCAC Meet Records in the 50 and 100 breaststrokes. His 50 breaststroke time (23.87) is the fastest in Division III history. Somridhivej also contributed to the Bates 200 freestyle relay, 200 medley relay, and 400 medley relays that broke the NESCAC and NESCAC Meet Records. The Bobcats’ 200 medley relay also set a new NCAA Division III record with a time of 1:25.57. #GoBates #mesports #d3swim

Male Bobcat of the Week - John Weigel ‘27 @batesswimanddive Weigel helped the Bates 200-yard freestyle relay team break their own school record and the meet record as well, grabbing first place in an NCAA ‘B’ Cut time of 1:20.07 at the Maine Collegiate Invite on Friday. He went on to break four more meet records, winning the the 200-yard IM in 1:52.52, leading off the 200-yard medley relay, which won in an NCAA ‘B’ Cut time of 1:28.50, winning the 200-yard freestyle in 1:40.49, and helping the 400-yard freestyle relay win in 3:01.00. Weigel was also the runner-up to teammate Max Cory in the 100-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 44.99 seconds. #GoBates #mesports #d3swim

Male Bobcat of the Week - Marrich Somridhivej ‘26 @batesswimanddive Bates men’s swimming and diving senior captain Marrich Somridhivej broke the NESCAC record in the 100-yard breaststroke to lead the Bobcats to victory in a dual meet at Middlebury on Sunday. The men’s team outscored the Panthers by a score of 175.5 to 114.5. Somridhivej dominated the 100-yard breaststroke with his winning time of 53.07 as the Bobcats took the top four spots in the race. He breaks his own school record in the event and also surpasses the previous NESCAC record of 53.47 seconds, set by Williams College’s Jacob Grover in 2022. Other Somridhivej highlights from the weekend include: Helping the Bates 200-yard medley relay team set a Tarbell Pool record with their winning time of 1:30.28 on Friday against Gettysburg. Winning the 50 breast in 25.63 seconds and the 100 breast in 55.69 seconds against Gettysburg. Helping the Bates 200-yard freestyle relay team emerge victorious in 1:23.46 against Gettysburg. Helping the Bates 200-yard medley relay team win their race against Middlebury in 1:32.54. Helping the Bates 200-yard freestyle relay team emerge victorious in 1:24.08 against Middlebury.
