OUThe federal government’s Endangered Species Committee—often referred to as the “God Squad”—voted on March 31st to override key protections under the Endangered Species Act, clearing the way for expanded oil and gas drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.
The high-level panel, which has the authority to exempt federal actions from ESA requirements, had not convened in more than 30 years. Its decision came swiftly, with the exemption approved after roughly 15 minutes of discussion and a unanimous vote from committee members.
The exemption, backed by officials within the Trump administration, is being justified on “national security” grounds, marking the first time such a rationale has been used to bypass ESA protections in the law’s 50-year history.
The decision has raised alarm among conservationists, particularly because the Gulf is home to the critically endangered Rice’s whale, a species found nowhere else on Earth with an estimated population of just 50 individuals.
Scientists and advocates warn that increased industrial activity, including vessel traffic and drilling operations, could push the species closer to extinction, especially after a significant population decline linked to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
Environmental groups and legal experts are already signaling potential challenges, questioning both the precedent set by invoking national security and whether the committee followed proper procedures under the law.
