Each Goshuin is believed to be imbued with the power of the deity or spirit enshrined at the temple or shrine. Getting a Goshuin isn’t just about collecting a stamp, it’s more like a ritual. You offer a small fee (usually around 300 to 500 yen) and your Goshuincho (special book meant only for collecting Goshuins) to the Temple’s attendant. They proceed to write your Goshuin with meticulous care, often accompanied by a short blessing or a prayer. One of the best things to bring home from your trip to Japan ❤️

📕 Goshuin Book making in Kyoto 💮 Finally I tried making my own Goshuin book! When I launched my Japan Shrine and Temple guide back in September, I had such an amazing response from everyone who’s interested in collecting goshuin. A follower had shared about KAMITOWA with me and I just had to go try it out for myself! The workshop was 45mins, and it was run in English & Japanese so it’s easy for everyone to understand. The Washi Paper company started with a wholesale business in Osaka before moving to Kyoto to start a workshop just 5 years ago. Now you can try to make your own washi or a goshuin book! ✨ If you don’t collect goshuin, you can still use your book as a regular notebook. Just don’t glue on the “goshuin book 御朱印帳” sign on the front of your book 🗣️English friendly: Both Hiro San and Junko san who run the worship speak English Kids are able to attend as well! We made a major Japan travel rookie mistake so you don’t have to. 🤦‍♀️🇯🇵 ​When we first started our journey through Japan, we were captivated by the beauty of Goshuin (holy seals). For those who don’t know, these aren’t just "stamps" they are hand-drawn pieces of sacred calligraphy and art, signed by monks or temple staff to commemorate your visit. ​Naturally, we wanted one. But here’s where we messed up... we didn't have a Goshuincho. ​A Goshuincho is a specific "honorable stamp book" with traditional accordion-fold paper designed specifically for these seals. Not knowing any better, we walked into the beautiful Hozen-ji Temple (法善寺) famous for its moss-covered Buddha and asked for a seal in a regular, everyday notebook we were carrying. 📓❌ ​Why this was a fail: ​Sacredness: These seals are considered a connection between you and the deity of the temple. Putting them in a random notebook alongside your grocery lists or travel notes is generally seen as disrespectful. ​The Paper: Real Goshuincho paper is thick and absorbent. In our normal notebook, the ink bled through, and the stamps didn't have that same "holy" texture. ​Refusals: Some temples are very strict and will actually refuse to give you a seal if you don't have a proper book. ​We learned the hard way that a Goshuincho is more than just a souvenir; it’s a sacred pilgrimage log. We eventually got our proper book, but that first entry at Hozen-ji remains a bittersweet reminder of how much we had to learn! ​Buy your Goshuincho at the first large temple or shrine you visit. They usually cost between 1,500–3,000 yen and often come with the temple’s unique cover design. ​Treat the book with respect don't use it for regular stickers or sketches! ​Have you ever made a "rookie mistake" while traveling in a new country? Se trata de esta libreta en formato acordeón, hecha especialmente para coleccionar Goshuin: sellos únicos de cada templo que visitas, hechos por los mismos monjes en tu cuaderno. Es como completar el Camino de Santiago japonés. Como no sé japonés, en la parte de atrás con lápiz he anotado a que templo corresponde cada uno para acordarme del momento en que conseguí cada uno de ellos. Abrir mi goshuincho me teletransporta directamente a los momentos donde me hicieron cada goshuin 💕 La libreta en si puedes conseguirla en cualquier papelería de Japón, la mía que ves llena la compré en mi primer día en el Loft de Shibuya. Aunque si durante tu viaje encuentras otros tan mágicos como ese segundo hecho de madera sagrada que te enseño, te recomiendo que no lo dejes pasar y te lo lleves aunque vayas a dejarlo vacío.
