Grid size has more of an impact on long term AAC success than you might think. When we say “AAC success” we mean the goal of a child, teenager or adult being able to say whatever they want, to whoever they want, whenever they want to say it. Giving them access to robust, reliable communication helps them to achieve this. That’s where grid sizes come in. Starting with a smaller grid size may seem like a good idea, but it makes communication harder. With a small grid size, your child has to navigate through multiple pages to find the words they need. And switching to larger grid sizes at a later stage can impact motor planning. A larger grid size gives them access to: ✅ Robust, reliable communication from the start. ✅ Room to grow alongside their device. Every child deserves a voice In kindy education support, so many children start school without access to their own AAC device. That waiting period can be long… and during that time, children still need a way to communicate. AAC is not something we “hold off on”. It’s something we provide immediately, so children have a voice now, not later. Whether a child is: ⭐️ waiting for their own device ⭐️ trialling AAC ⭐️ or may never go down the high-tech AAC pathway 👉 They still deserve access to alternative forms of communication. 💬 What AAC looks like in our classroom AAC is embedded into everything we do: ⭐️ PODD books used throughout the day ⭐️ ALD boards paired with every activity ⭐️ An interactive PODD on our IWB for whole-class discussions and instructions ⭐️ All staff wear a PODD book, so communication is always available ⭐️ Visuals in so many different forms ⭐️ modelling in all forms of AAC within the classroom, including both high tech and low tech AAC isn’t an “extra” it’s part of our environment, routines and relationships. ❌ Myth: “AAC limits language in children who already have a voice.” ✅ Truth: AAC actually enhances language development. Here’s why: ⭐️ AAC gives children more ways to express themselves, not fewer ⭐️ It supports understanding of vocabulary, sentence structure and concepts ⭐️ It reduces frustration, which allows children to focus on learning ⭐️ Spoken language and AAC develop together, they are not in competition AAC doesn’t replace speech. It supports, strengthens and grows it. AAC is not a last resort. It’s a powerful tool for inclusion, dignity and connection. Have you heard of the AAC Genie? 🧞 It is an informal qualitative diagnostic tool designed to inform AAC assessment and device trials. The main use of this, too, is to guide clinical reasoning about which type of AAC systems we want to introduce for further assessment. The AAC Evaluation Genie should support informed AAC trials when integrated with functional, culturally responsive, and evidence-based AAC assessment practices. This tool, along with any other diagnostic tool, should not be used in isolation when making AAC recommendations. Slowly adding new words—while customizing symbols with familiar, meaningful icons—can help reduce visual fatigue and prevent unnecessary relearning. When transitioning from low-tech to high-tech AAC, I aim to make the shift as seamless as possible. The symbol editor in TD Snap makes it easy to provide students with low vision or CVI symbols that feel familiar and accessible.
