Two of the world’s most elite writing competitions just opened their doors to students as young as Grade 7.
For the first time ever, the Cambridge Re:Think Essay Competition has launched a Junior Division ages 11 and above can now compete. It is completely free to enter. Winners receive cash prizes, scholarships, and an invitation to a black-tie awards dinner at King’s College, Cambridge, where a Nobel Prize-winning physicist will take the stage.
This is not a participation trophy event. In 2025, over 13,000 students from 50+ countries submitted. Only 33 won.
Then there is the Harvard International Review Academic Writing Contest. This one carries a registration fee, and for good reason. Make it to the finals, and you do not just submit an essay. You stand before Harvard judges, deliver a 15-minute live presentation, and defend your argument like a doctoral scholar. That is the bar.
Topics span Cybersecurity, Space, Global Politics, Law, and International Affairs. No coaching centre shortcut will carry you through either. These competitions demand your original voice, your original thinking. AI checkers and Defense Day interviews will expose anything less.
Parents, if Ivy League or Oxbridge is the goal, this is exactly the profile builder that separates your child at 16 from 10,000 identical applications at 18.

7-year-old Ethan drew four people. Mom - smiling. Sister - smiling. Ethan - smiling. Dad - no smile. Mouth a straight line.
The teacher: “Ethan, why isn’t daddy smiling?”
“Because daddy doesn’t smile.”
“Never?”
“He smiles at work. I saw it when we picked him up. He was talking to someone and laughing. Then he got in the car and stopped.”
The teacher pulled mom Jessica aside after school. Showed her the drawing.
Jessica looked at the straight line where a smile should be. “He’s a good father. He’s just tired.”
The teacher said gently: “Your son thinks daddy is happy everywhere except home.”
Jessica didn’t sleep that night. Because Ethan drew the truth that adults hide behind the word “tired”: home stopped being the place where he unwinds. Home became another job.
