What is the Oregon Vortex?
The Oregon Vortex is a spherical field of force, half above the ground and half below it. OBIn the move - Interstellar, Cooper experiences gravitational time dilation - a real effect predicted by Einstein’s theory of relativity.
When he and the crew land on Miller’s planet, it’s orbiting close to a massive black hole called Gargantua. The gravity there is so strong, it literally slows down time.
Just 1 hour on that planet equals 7 years on Earth. So while Cooper and Brand spend only a few hours there, 23 years pass for people back home - including his daughter, Murph, who grows up, becomes a scientist, and spends her life trying to save humanity.
Later, Cooper sacrifices himself and falls into the black hole, where time becomes even stranger. He ends up in the tesseract, a higher-dimensional space where time is a physical dimension he can move through. There, he communicates with Murph across time - helping her solve the equation that ultimately saves mankind.
By the time he’s rescued and wakes up on Cooper Station, Murph is now a very old woman. Cooper, because of the way time passed for him, has barely aged.
It’s not magic — it’s physics.
Time didn’t pass equally for them. Love did.
