Designers love grotesque fonts, but did you know the word literally means “ugly”?
During the Renaissance, artists found strange cave paintings in Rome. They thought these drawings were distorted and ugly, so they called them “grotesque” (Italian for “from the cave”).
Centuries later, when the first sans-serif fonts appeared with no decorative curls or fancy endings, people found them just as weird and unnatural as those cave paintings. So they called them grotesques too!
Today, “grotesque” in a font name isn’t about being ugly anymore - it’s a bold nod to design history.
From cave walls to clean sans serif, grotesque has always meant strange at first, timeless later.
