This is one of my favorite groundwork exercises because it helps develop three foundational qualities in your horse—qualities you may not even realize are missing. 1. Respect In groundwork, whoever moves their feet the least is the most dominant. Like it or not, your horse needs to respect you as the leader. This exercise helps reinforce that respect by establishing clear boundaries and expectations. This is done predominantly in step number one. 2. Responsiveness You want a horse that responds quickly and with effort when asked to do something. This exercise teaches them to do just that—whether it’s moving forward, disengaging the hindquarters, or changing direction. From a balance and biomechanics standpoint, the way this drill is structured actually helps the horse teach themselves how to respond more promptly and efficiently. 3. Relaxation Every horse needs to be relaxed around their handler. If this exercise is done properly, your horse will become more confident in your leadership. With that confidence comes relaxation, because they trust you won’t ask them to do anything to truly hurt or endanger them. This exercise works with horses of all ages and experience levels. It’s a go-to in my program and something I use consistently with every horse I work with. #cowboy #western #cowboys #cowboylife #westernlife #westernlifestyle #horse #horses #horsetraining #groundwork #horseman #horsewoman #horsemanship

Stuck for groundwork training ideas? Want to build your relationship, improve your horse’s fitness and have fun without riding? I love working my horses from the ground as it’s such a lovely way to communicate and work together. I enjoy finding exercises that build their strength, fitness and body awareness in lots of different ways. It’s exciting to give them the freedom to work in liberty, finding their own balance or figuring out agility obstacles. I love to help horses overcome problems and build their confidence while despooking or trailer loading or about daily handling tasks like fly spray or clipping. A bit of trick training just makes everyone smile! Seriously, though, if you can’t ride at the moment trying something new with your horse like agility, clicker training or liberty work is the perfect way to stay motivated and have fun together. I hope this inspires you! If you would like to watch the full Youtube video then comment IDEAS and we will DM the video straight to you. If you would like guidance and a step-by-step program to train each of these then comment CT Club and we will send you all th info you need to join the club - never be at a loss with your horse again! #positivereinforcement #clickertraininghorse #clickertrainedhorses #horse #horsetrainingprogram #positivereinforcementtrainingforhorses #clickertraining

One of my email subscribers asked how to introduce a horse to something new and inspired me to share my take on desensitizing horses 🐴💡. There are lots of training methods out there, but I’ll tell you this: curiosity always beats fear. And yes… I told Bubbles I was sorry, but mommy had to scare her for the views so we can pay her vet bills 😂 She totally understood. #desensitizinghorses #horsetrainingtips #horsemanship #groundwork #horseman

❓“What groundwork exercises should I be doing with my horse?” This is a question I’ve been getting a lot recently. 🐎 One of the number one exercises I recommend for any horse and rider is the poll release. 🐴 It’s a great exercise to help get your horse relaxed and focused, plus it teaches them how to lower their head, making it easier for them to learn how to get round and on the bit under saddle. 💯 🙋‍♀️ Want to learn more about how groundwork can help you and your horse? You’re in luck! ✨ As I mentioned before, I’ve had an influx of questions about Groundwork and In-hand work this winter and I knew I had to fit it in a Groundwork Webinar. ❄️ I assume it’s the colder weather that’s encouraging riders to do a bit more groundwork! 🔥 So if you would like to learn more about how groundwork can help you and your horse, I encourage you to come take advantage of this free learning opportunity! In this webinar, I will be going over👇:  🦄 Why Groundwork is an insurance policy every rider should have 🦄 Four Dressage movements you MUST train from the ground – here’s why…  🦄 A Groundwork Practice will Transform Your Riding ⏰ Join me this Sunday, Feb 2nd, at 12 noon PT for an epic webinar! 🆓 It’s FREE to attend, but RSVP is required. 🔥 Comment below “RSVP” and I’ll send you the link to save your seat! #dressage #horsetraining #dressagetraining @kasteldenmark @customsaddlery

Does your horse get spooky when you’re riding off-property? In those moments, you should never: ❌ Push your horse towards the scary thing, or... ❌ Tighten the reins and try to control your horse. But what should you do? I encourage my horses to face the scary thing by guiding them back into the groundwork patterns. These are exercises they know and make them feel in control and relaxed. I use these patterns to fall back on when my horses feel nervous. This keeps us both safe when we’re riding somewhere new!

Are you getting better every single day? Is your horse getting better? If you're not, then let's start at the beginning: with your goal. With your VERY specific target of what you want to achieve with your horse, whether that's connection, trust, respect, or finesse. Break it down. Write it out. Be clear. Be specific. Don't just say, "I want to ride my horse three times a week." Say, "I will ride my horse Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning, doing three liberty-based groundwork exercises to address my horse's trouble spot of X before getting on. And then, once I am on, I will focus on softening my horse through their head, neck, and body using circle exercises before practicing proper body control in our lope transitions during our main ride. The Monday ride will be with my coach who can help guide my training. I will use their feedback to practice key weaknesses during the remainder of our rides each week and use my coach to hold me accountable on our work." If you want to achieve big results, this is what you need to do. Produce little wins - consistent wins - that will lead up to the big wins, of connection, of trust, of respect, of finesse. Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither will your partnership be with your horse. Start small, and follow along for the steps to learn how to grow. 🎥 @leah_Lazic_media #libertytraining #coltstarting #horsemanship #horses #naturalhorsemanship #horsetraining #horsetok

Webinar anouncement: It's all about BALANCE! I have been sharing a lot about the polyvagal principles, connection, emotional balance and learning recently. However, I also want my horse to be physically balanced! I can do my training session in the arena, but even if you don't have an arena you can do some simple exercises to improve your horse's balance when you take your horse for a walk. I often get this question: "But how do I see if my horse is (un)balanced? Why should I introduce lateral work in my training? How do I teach shoulder in or haunches in?" Do you have these questions as well? FREE Masterclass coming up (link in bio)! I will be doing a FREE Masterclass - June 13th and June 15th (it's the same webinar at different times to accommodate different timezones) Do you want to train your eye and become a confident trainer? Do you want to learn how inhand gymnastic exercises can help improve your horse’s balance but only from a calm and connected place? Prepare your horse to be a balanced and safe riding horse! #Groundwork #horsetraining #sidemovements #shoulderin #haunchesin #halfpass

Not all groundwork is effective! A lot of it is rubbish and ineffective 🤦‍♀️ BUT there are ways of doing it that make it incredible valuable and creates a deeper bond with your horse ⬇️ Have you ever been told “oh just do some groundwork that will help your horse behave better”. So you stand in the round yard or arena and move your horse around a bit, but feel like it’s not actually achieving anything?! Or worse, someone says “I’ll do some groundwork with your horse and teach him some manners” 😖 and suddenly there’s dust flying, the lead rope is being swung around and your horse is skating backwards as fast as he can, backing up. Because someone told that ‘trainer’ at some point that backing a horse up teaches ‘respect’😳. Nope. The thing is, all that achieves is the exercise. The movement. The physical outcome. None of that teaches your horse how to feel (apart from feeling anxiety, fear and tension with the other trainer 🥺). We want to be able to do groundwork so that our horses can mentally connect with us. So they stop reactively focusing on external stimuli and can calmly look to us for guidance. Effective groundwork teaches the horse to ✨ use body language as communication ✨ focus on how we move our bodies softly to influence theirs ✨ creates a positive bridge between the physical exercise and the horse’s mental state ✨ develop communication, connection and confidence. Searching for a better connection with your horse? Or wanting to help your horse look to you for guidance? I’ll teach you exactly how I achieve this soft connection and bond through effective groundwork in the video Library - packed full of simple and easy to replicate videos. Comment LIBRARY below and I’ll send you the link in a DM 🫶 #horsemanship #naturalhorsemanship #horsetraining #dressage #ottb #horses #horseriding #showjumping #westernhorse
