MOAsuka the mystery grub is growing rapidly! The larger and heavier she gets the more it’s looking like she’s a Hercules beetle. Her faceplate is much darker than North American stag beetle larvae have, and so are her spiracles (those are the spots along her side that are actually her respiratory organs.) She also is a different shape and way thicker than stag larvae. I’m fairly confident at this stage that even if she’s not a Hercules, everything about her appearance (and the fact that she’s thriving in flake soil) suggests she’s somewhere in the dynastinae beetle subfamily.
Unlike Henri I don’t have a hatch date for Asuka, since she was found in my Mom’s garden. So I don’t have a solid timeline of when we’ll actually see what kind of beetle she is. Since this was likely her third shed, I’m hopeful that she’ll pupate in the next few months. If not, she may nearly double in size one more time before pupating sometime in the spring.

This is a Protaetia grub! it’s got a wonderfully chubby body & it’s TINY little legs are pretty useless, so I think it’s use their little folds/ridges & hairs on their backs to gain traction to help it move!
I think it’s rather cool tbh! they’re just silly little guys 🪱 (closest emoji)
