NEA little experiment in ultra-wide-range gearing on a road bike...
Shimano state their 105 Di2 rear derailleur has a maximum cassette size of 36t. And the 105 front derailleur is not compatible with GRX chainsets due to different chain lines. The whole system has a maximum capacity of 41t. We wondered, "yeah, but what if we wanted really low gears?" so we gave a it go...
Behold! A 2x road bike with a 12spd 11-42t cassette paired with a 46/30t chainset. That's a 585% gear range which is more than a MTB or any gravel bike. The rear mech is shifting a cassette 16% larger than the stated maximum. The front mech is shifting perfectly. And the whole system is working even though it's at 47t, that's 6t over the max.
You've got a super low range bottom gear - enough to get you up any hill you can find - with a large enough top gear that you can still comfortably ride at 50kph
Nothing has been modified apart from adding a longer limit screw on the front mech. We didn't even need to change the length of the chain from the stock 50/34 and 36t cassette!
Shimano do state that none of these parts should be used together, and if you do you *will* void your warranty if someone were to break. We are not advising you try this at home, we're doing this to our own bike and showing what's possible.
We'll do a little more testing soon, but so far on a couple of short rides it's been pretty good!
