If a spinning wheel is held from one side, gravity should pull it down… right?
But instead of falling, it moves sideways.
Why?
Because a spinning object has angular momentum.
When gravity tries to tip it over, the force doesn’t make it fall —

HEA gyroscope survives as it rotates, thanks to the preservation of angular momentum. Angular torque depends on the rotation, speed, mass and shape of an object. A rotating gyroscope resists changes in orientation, the gyroscope suffers from gyroscope imagery when a force tries to tilt it.
This means that it moves upright while maintaining it's position perpendicular to the applied force. This unique stability is why gyroscopes are so important for ship and aircraft navigation.
