I thought OCD meant my life was over, that I would never experience the before, that OCD was the after. I remember feeling like my brain would never function “normally” again, that I would never not have 24/7 rapid fire intrusive thoughts that terrorized me. . I was wrong. . There is an after the OCD, too ❤️ I don’t currently meet diagnostic criteria for OCD. I have soooooo much more space in my brain. I don’t experience repetitive intrusive thoughts (I do get them occasionally). I am 97% better. I am writing a memoir about my lived experience with OCD to share with the world. . One of the hardest parts of OCD is feeling like you’ve lost your identity and life forever. You haven’t. It gets better. I needed to see that when I was struggling. . . . . . . . . . . . . . #ocd #ocdawareness #ocdrecovery #pocd #harmocd #pureo #intrusivethoughtsawareness #intrusivethoughts #ocdrecovery #anxiety #therapy #therapistsofinstagram #neurodivergent #postpartumocd #perinatalmentalhealth #ocdawarenessweek #pureo #cptsd #traumahealing #recovery #ocdproblems #ocdsupport

Harm OCD often shows up as “What if I lose control and hurt someone?” or “What if I secretly want to?” Trying to prove you’re a good person keeps you stuck in the cycle. Instead, respond with indifference: “Maybe I will, maybe I won’t.” This simple shift creates space between you and OCD. DM or COMMENT the word HELP to receive a free OCD recovery guide.

okay listen... this isnt to say people are out here literally faking ocd lol but I find that wording gets more attention to the matter than "stereotypical vs actual". ocd comes in all forms but it is severe intrusive thoughts that cause panic and compulsive behaviors to combat that panic. it is not simply organization or being neat. and it is because of the way people say things like "my desk has to be neat because im soOOoo OCD" that perpetuates this very false stereotype and leads to people like myself who dont get diagnosed until their mid 30s. #ocd #ocdsymptoms #obsessivecompulsivedisorder #contaminationocd #harmocd

5 things I do when OCD tells me my cake will poison people 🙄 Follow @jessmarrinertherapy for more relatable insights into OCD. & Anxiety from a therapist who’s been there and gets it ✨✨✨ The things ⤵️ 1. Bake the cake and serve it anyway - even though my brain is screaming that something’s wrong with it, even though I don’t have 100% certainty it won’t. 2. Don’t ask for reassurance that it’s safe (no “does this look okay to you?” or ingredient list reviews) 3. Resist the urge to google food poisoning symptoms or baking safety for the millionth time 4. Don’t eat a piece first as a “safety test” - I serve it to others without checking myself 5. Sit with the discomfort of uncertainty instead of doing mental reviews in my head of every step I took. No checking what ingredients are I used or what is in the bin. No mental images of how I made the cake. This is what actual OCD recovery looks like. It’s not about feeling confident the cake is safe. It’s about doing the thing anyway while your brain throws a fit. It’s choosing the meaningful action - baking for others (in this case 🫶🏻) That’s the work. That’s how you get your life back 💪🏼 #ocd #harmocd #ocdtherapist

💡 The ONE PHRASE that works for ALL types of OCD Stop trying to solve the unsolvable! Whether you're battling contamination fears, harm OCD, or moral OCD, this simple response cuts through the endless "what if" cycle. Your brain demands certainty, but here's the truth: You can't problem-solve something that hasn't happened (and likely never will). When that restaurant thought hits—"What if the chef didn't wash their hands?"—skip the reviews, questioning, and anxiety. Instead: "Then I guess it happens. 🤷‍♀️" It feels uncomfortable at first, but you're teaching your brain a powerful lesson: life involves risk, and that's okay! Save your reactions for REAL problems you can see (like that worker vaping while cooking 😳), not the imaginary disasters OCD creates. #OCDRecovery #ThenItHappens #OCDTips #ExposureTherapy #AnxietyRelief #OCDTreatment #MentalHealthTips #IntrusiveThoughts #OCDFreedom #UncertaintyTolerance #ContaminationOCD #HarmOCD #OCDAwareness #AnxietyManagement #OCDCommunity #TherapyTools #MentalHealthJourney #OCDHack #RecoveryIsPossible #ERP

Confessing every detail so that a person (including therapist) “really knows you” can be a compulsion for people with OCD. They may feel like if they don’t share every single thing, they are lying and the therapist will not be able to assess whether or not it’s OCD aka “if you don’t hear every detail, I can’t trust that it’s actually OCD and not you just thinking it’s OCD” . OCD specialists are aware of this and often (kindly) stop clients from going down this road 🤎 The confession is more engagement with obsessions that ultimately fuel’s OCD’s presence. . Who can relate though? 😂 . . . . . . . . . . . . . #ocd #obsessivecompulsivedisorder #intrusivethoughts #ocdawareness #ocdrecovery #pocd #harmocd #rocd #ocdsupport #ocdhelp #traumahealing #cptsd #youarenotyourthoughts #therapy #therapymemes #therapistsofinstagram #ocdmemes #postpartumocd #perinatalmentalhealth #neurodivergent #pureo #pureocd

OCD really is like that sometimes with the constant pop-ins of the last thing you would ever want to think 🙉 I once described it as a pair of headphones glued to my ears that I couldn’t take off playing the scariest thoughts over and over 🎧 . OCD is not just a fear of contamination 🙅🏼‍♀️ Obsessional fears vary WIDELY. . Obsessions are ego-dystonic: opposite to a person’s values and self-concept; undesirable to them. . OCD: when your brain gets stuck on the last thing you want to be thinking about 🫠 . Yes, people without OCD can have such thoughts. The difference is that they stick for the person with OCD and are very distressing. It’s not a passing thought that can be easily dismissed but an onslaught of thoughts, images, and urges that are pervasive. . The person with OCD feels the urge to perform compulsions (mental or physical) to alleviate anxiety or discomfort, prevent something bad from happening, seek certainty, etc. . OCD is a deeply painful disorder and not what the media often portrays it as . . . . . . . . . . . #ocd #pureo #pureocd #mentalhealth #psychology #obsessivecompulsivedisorder #pocd #rocd #soocd #harmocd #postpartumocd #perinatalmentalhealth #healthanxiety #socialanxiety #intrusivethoughts #anxietyhelp

The kids would call this ✨delulu✨ OCD feels SO real and can be SO convincing. . I felt like a criminaI just for having the thoughts. Then my brain would try and convince me that maybe I did something wrong, something that I would get “caught” and arrested for. . This is not about intelligence. People with OCD are often extremely intelligent. It’s about living with a doubting disorder that gaslights you constantly and feeds you with the most terrifying thoughts that FEEL so real. It’s about the brain and body misfiring. .
