real cost of living in Paris as an HEC student - no fluff, just numbers 🏠 rent: €699 (studio on campus, utilities included) 🧺 laundry: ~€50-60/month (€3 wash + €1 dry, 4x/week) 🛒 groceries: ~€180/month (€45/week, high protein diet) 🚇 transport: <€50/month (free HEC shuttles + occasional ubers) 🍽️ eating out: ~€100/month (trying to stick to this lol) 📱 phone: €9/month (lebara) 🛍️ misc: ~€100/month 💶 total: €1,100-1,200/month 💰 after CAF (french housing aid): €900-1,000/month things that are expensive: ubers, eating out, OTC medicines, some grocery items things that are cheap: wine, yogurt, basic staples where I don’t compromise: experiences. site seeing, movie nights, weekend trips - that’s what I’m here for budgeting hacks I use: fixed budgets for groceries, eating out, transport 1. split money into different bank accounts 2. ⁠keep savings in Indian account (harder to transfer = less impulse spending) 3. ⁠use CAF money to offset costs I have scholarships running but even then, you need to be smart. 1- “T’as plus de vie sociale” Quand je suis arrivé en prépa, j’ai vite compris que je verrais moins mes potes. Et c’est ok. La prépa t’aide à savoir qui sont tes vrais amis, ceux que t’as encore envie de voir après 4h de DS le samedi. Et en prépa, t’es pas tout seul : tu rencontres des gens incroyable et tu vis quelque chose de fort avec eux. C’est une expérience sociale (je recommande). ——— 2- “La prépa c’est trop dur” “Vous pensez ? Moi je pense pas”, disait Nietzsche. Si tu veux HEC, oui, faut bosser. Mais ce qui est trop dur, c’est se lever à 6h pour aller travailler à l’usine, pas pour écouter des profs qui ont fait l’ENS. En prépa, j’étais ambitieux (HEC ou rien), donc j’ai beaucoup travaillé. Mais je l’ai choisi. C’est le prix à payer pour atteindre ses objectifs. ——— 3- “Prépa maqué = prépa raté” Encore faux. Si ton couple ne survit pas à la prépa, le problème, c’est ton mec ou ta meuf, pas la prépa. Être en couple ne te condamne pas à rater tes concours. Si ton couple t’apaise, te stabilise, te permet de souffler, c’est un avantage énorme. S’il pompe toute ton énergie, ton temps et ta concentration, là oui, ça devient compliqué… ——— 4- “C’est impossible d’avoir plus de 10 de moyenne en prépa” En vrai de vrai, la vraie vérité, on s’en fiche. Les notes ne veulent rien dire. J’ai un ami qui n’a jamais eu la moyenne en ESH en deux ans de prépa et qui a eu 19/20 au concours. Il faut juste suivre son classement et l’évolution de ses notes. Mais c’est possible d’avoir + de 10 de moyenne, pas besoin d’être un génie (la preuve, j’y arrivais, j’avais même + de 15 en culture G). ——— 5- “Il y a des gens FAITS pour la prépa” C’est le mensonge le plus dangereux. Personne n’est “fait” pour la prépa. Tu peux ne pas être intelligent et obtenir une très bonne école. La prépa récompense davantage le travail et la régularité que le “génie” du crack en maths. Tout le monde peut faire une prépa et réussir. ——— Moi c’est Edouard, étudiant à l’EDHEC, sportif, voyageur. Abonne-toi. Je t’aide à réussir ta prépa et à survivre en école de commerce.
