SEHow to avoid cultural erasure: it’s easy. Simply say “ancient Greeks” instead of “the Greeks”. Or “Ancient Greek” instead of “Greek”.
There’s a lot of things I won’t get into that really feel like cultural erasure as a Greek person (sororities and fraternities, I’m looking at you) but the biggest one is when people talk about us as if we are extinct.
It reeks of colonizer language, as if the only way to justify participation in an ancient Greek religion is to establish that there is no native culture left. It reminds me of what they did to the Mayans, or Hoodoo practices.
But Hellenic polytheism and all varieties of working with our gods is an open practice, it is for everyone. But please: remember Greeks still exist. ❤️
The fix is really simple though. Only refer to Greece and Greeks if you mean the living ones today. The living country of today.
Because our traditions are living ones, and our culture most certainly is alive and well.
Also, just a reminder that what we consider ancient Greek goes back to about 400 BC. 300 BC is thought to be the beginning of the speaking of modern Greek, so contemporary to Alexander the Great.
The majority of writings and myths that we have come from 300 BC or much newer. Sooooo modern Greek pronunciation is probably more appropriate than you realize. I have a good vid on sacred sound’s role in our change in pronunciation if you scroll down on my profile!

ANLUSTRAL WATER ⬇️ or Khernips is the all purpose cleanser of Hellenic polytheism
Blessed water is used widely in magick and traditions but Khernips is truly an *icon*
It was alluded to in the Theogony when Hesiod writes “Never pour a libation of sparkling wine to Zeus after dawn with unwashen hands, nor to others of the deathless Gods; else they do not hear your prayers but spit them back.”
To make Khernips take fresh spring or filtered water and add sea salt. Then take a branch or sprig of any of the herbals I list below, and light it on fire.
As you do dedicate that fire to Hestia, Godess of the Hearth and the Eternal Flame. Then put out the flaming herb into the water, which in turn blesses it.
Say a prayer to Hestia and the Gods to finalize the spell, I like to say “Earth and Starry Sky bless this water and make it Khernips, Hestia goddess of eternal flame bless this water and make it Khernips”
If you work with a specific pantheon diety than you can also call upon them.
