There’s a difference between fear and awareness. Fear spirals. Awareness steadies. I lost Oakley on 12/29/25 to hemangiosarcoma. A tumor had ruptured on his spleen causing internal bleeding. By the time I got him to the emergency vet, I had very little time to make a hard decision. He was suffering in pain, and I was dying inside knowing this would be the last time I’d ever see him. Hemangiosarcoma often develops internally — especially in the spleen or heart — and early symptoms can be subtle or non-specific. That’s what makes it so devastating. Later that night after coming home and losing my best friend, I went down every rabbit hole, questioning myself on what I could’ve done differently and how couldn’t I have known. Never in a million years would I ever want anyone else to feel the way I did. I share his story not to scare anyone — but because loving well sometimes means understanding the quiet things too. If you’re loving a dog right now, you deserve calm, clear information — not panic 🤍🐾 I created this page to grieve Oakley but also help, and ultimately make a difference for other dogs in the future. His strength and resilience continues to inspire us more than we can put into words. These past few months have been the hardest we’ve ever faced, but being his caretakers through this journey has also been one of the greatest honors of our lives. Right now Graffiti is doing well, enjoying his routines and the simple moments that mean everything. Thank you for every prayer, kind message, and hopeful thought you’ve sent his way. Hemangiosarcoma is one of the most challenging cancers we face in Golden Retrievers. Unlike single-gene disorders with a straightforward DNA test, hemangiosarcoma risk is polygenic — influenced by multiple genetic regions working together. That means there isn’t a simple “yes or no” test for breeders to use yet. What we can do today is focus on the factors that truly make a difference: • Multi-gene risk research: Ongoing studies at the Broad Institute, University of Minnesota, and the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study are identifying genetic regions associated with increased risk. This is where future multi-gene risk assessments will come from. • Longevity in breeding lines: One of the strongest indicators of reduced cancer risk is proven longevity in a pedigree. We pay very close attention to dogs and ancestors who lived well into their senior years (12–14+). Long-lived lines matter. • Lowering COI (Coefficient of Inbreeding): Higher COIs can increase expression of harmful recessives and reduce genetic diversity. We work to keep COIs as low as possible in our pairings while still preserving working ability and type — a balance that supports long-term health. Research is moving in the right direction, but early detection is still difficult. Hemangiosarcoma often shows no symptoms until internal bleeding occurs. Subtle signs may include pale gums, fatigue, or weakness that comes and goes. Emergency signs include collapse, labored breathing, abdominal swelling, or coughing blood. We experienced this firsthand with our own girl, Birdie, whose symptoms appeared suddenly despite being energetic and healthy right up until that day. Her diagnosis was confirmed with a liquid biopsy — a test that detects existing cancer, not future risk — and we made the difficult decision to let her go that night. Our goal in sharing this is education, not fear. Last week really tested us and honestly it took everything we had. We were stretched in ways we haven’t been before. But the way Graffiti recovered and showed us how strong he is, how much he still wants to be here, has been incredible to witness. There were parts we didn’t include in the video because some moments were just too raw. It made us realize how important support is at this stage. There was a moment that shook us, and showed us we shouldn’t be navigating this alone. Bringing professional hospice support into our home has changed how we’re approaching this, and it gives us a steadier foundation if things shift again. Since the bleed last Wednesday, we’ve watched Graffiti grow stronger every day. Brighter eyes, steadier energy, more engagement, more him. We’ve seen him rebound once before, and watching him rebuild again reminds us exactly who he is. He’s steady. He’s resilient. He’s pressing forward on his own terms. He’s a warrior. 🤍 We know we’re in a serious place right now. We’re not ignoring that. But we will meet whatever comes with clarity, and his comfort will always come before anything else. A common misconception is that if your senior has normal lab work then they are healthy. . Some of the most common cancers in our pets do not show major changes in lab work. . Cancers such as hemangiosarcoma, carcinoma, osteosarcoma, mast cell tumor and transitional cell carcinoma often show normal lab work values. . This makes it extremely difficult to know that our senior pets are healthy. So what do we do? . Radiographs are a much better indicator or cancer in our senior pet or an abdominal ultrasound yearly to monitor for cancer. . We do now have NuQ and Oncotect which are blood/urine tests to help indicate certain kinds of cancers. But these are not routine. . This is often cost prohibitive and I’m not saying you have to do this. . I just want owners to know that if your pet is having nonspecific signs and they have normal lab work, maybe ask for more testing. . Nonspecific signs of cancer could include: 🐾 Intermittent appetite changes, vomiting, diarrhea 🐾 Urinating or drinking more or less 🐾 Weight loss or gain 🐾 Muscle loss 🐾 Coughing 🐾 Lethargy . . “We’re just diagnosing it more now.” So… it was better when dogs were just dropping dead and we didn’t have a name for it? That sudden collapse, internal bleeding, “we have no idea what happened…” that was somehow acceptable… as long as it wasn’t labeled cancer? No. That doesn’t make this better. It makes it clearer. Advancements in diagnosis merely exposed the problem… one that’s becoming a bigger problem every day. And the idea that cancer is just something we should expect because dogs are “living longer” is just as backwards. Since when did we decide that the goal is simply to keep dogs alive long enough to develop chronic, degenerative disease? Why is the benchmark not vital, resilient, disease-free life for as long as possible? Cancer is not some benign, inevitable milestone of aging that we should casually accept as “well, something’s gotta get them.” It is a sign that something in the dog’s system, whether internally, environmentally, or both, has broken down. Something is out of balance. And instead of asking why that breakdown is happening more often and earlier, many veterinarians and dog parents are normalizing it, labeling it and explaining it a way. I suppose that it is much easier than confronting the possibility that what we’ve built as “modern care” might not be producing the outcomes we think it is. We understand dogs won’t live forever, and we’re grateful that there are vets, scientists, and dog advocates asking why young, loved, well-cared-for dogs are developing aggressive cancers in the first place, why they’re affecting more and more young dogs. Thank you. Dogs deserve so much better than “they’re just living longer” or “we’re just better at diagnosing.” That’s more complacency. Rest in peace to all of those sweet souls mentioned in this reel. And to the families… I am all too familiar with the pain, with being blindsided, heartbroken and furious. While nothing makes that loss easier, we were grateful to know what was coming and to make the most of the time we had left together. She only had a week or two remaining, and the cancer would have ended her life in a traumatic and painful way. We chose to let her go a little early, sparing her unnecessary suffering and giving her a peaceful goodbye. Frankie was a once-in-a-lifetime dog companion — there will never be another her. She was my dog, my friend, and my support through some of my darkest moments. I had her from a puppy until the very end of her life, and I will always feel incredibly fortunate to have loved a dog so deeply that saying goodbye hurts this much.
