📍Hetch Hetchy | Details👇 Hetch Hetchy Yosemite National Park Hetch Hetchy is often called “Yosemite’s little sister” because of its similar but smaller scale beauty compared to Yosemite Valley. The valley shares many of the same stunning natural features, including granite cliffs, waterfalls, and scenic vistas. Before the dam was built, it was known for its striking resemblance to Yosemite Valley, with John Muir and others celebrating its beauty. While Hetch Hetchy is now mostly submerged as a reservoir, the surrounding landscape still retains that resemblance and offers a quieter, less crowded alternative for experiencing Yosemite’s grandeur. Spring is waterfall season in Yosemite National Park! If you’re heading that way, don’t miss this hidden gem in the Hetch Hetchy area: Wapama Falls. Hetch Hetchy is about a 1.5-hour drive from Yosemite Valley and only one percent of visitors ever venture out to this beautiful part of the park. (It’s open daily from sunrise to sunset.) To hike to Wapama Falls you’ll cross over the dam, through the tunnel and continue along the lakeshore trail for a 5-mile round trip easy hike. A series of bridges takes you in front of the falls, and in the springtime, you’ll definitely get wet from all the spray. When we decided at the last minute to drive down and check this waterfall off our bucket list, we made reservations for the night before at the @bestwestern Plus Sonora Oaks Hotel. It’s conveniently located in the historic gateway town of Sonora, CA in the beautiful Sierra Nevada Foothills- the heart of California’s “Gold Country.” We ended up driving almost 2,000 miles to see this waterfall and a few others in the Valley, and the trip turned out to be one of our favorites to date. Have you been to Hetch Hetchy yet? #Bestwestern #bestwesternpartner

There’s a secluded Yosemite waterfall that doesn’t just impress you…it drenches you!💦 Wapama Falls pours over the trail in spring and it’s one of Yosemite’s most underrated hikes. While thousands crowd the valley, Hetch Hetchy stays quiet in the summer and the views? Wild granite cliffs, thunderous cascades, multiple waterfall crossings and a footbridge that puts you directly in the path of the largest falls! Things to know👇 • Trailhead: Hetch Hetchy Entrance (always check opening hours) • Distance: 5 miles RT, 500 ft elevation • Time: Visit in the morning to avoid heat + wind • Spring is best: This is a snow melt fed seasonal waterfall so don’t wait until late summer • Wear: Footwear made for rocky, slick terrain if you want to get close to the falls! * Always adventure within your own skill & safety level. This waterfall can be extremely dangerous in high flow seasons and the footbridges can occasionally close due to the dangerously powerful waterfall flow. 👉 Send this to someone you’d hike Wapama Falls with and follow @flyingdawnmarie so you don’t miss any of my upcoming Yosemite Waterfall Series — And sign up for my newsletter to get my Yosemite waterfall checklist with over 30 Yosemite waterfalls you have to see to believe!💦 📌 Save this for your Yosemite adventure and let me know…would you hike under this waterfall?👇 #YosemiteWaterfalls #WapamaFalls #HiddenYosemite #YosemiteNationalPark #FlyingDawnMarie #HetchHetchy #CaliforniaHikes #WaterfallWednesday #NationalParkAdventures #NatureLovers #YosemiteSpring #YosemiteTips

Three Facts About Hetch Hetchy you might not know... 1️⃣ It Was Once a Valley Just Like Yosemite. Before it was dammed in 1923, Hetch Hetchy was often called Yosemite’s twin—home to soaring granite cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and wildflower meadows. Today, it’s a lesser-known but still stunning corner of Yosemite National Park. 2️⃣ It Supplies Water to San Francisco. Hetch Hetchy Reservoir provides some of the cleanest drinking water in the U.S., serving over 2.5 million Bay Area residents. It travels more than 160 miles via gravity alone—no pumps needed! 3️⃣ It Sparked a Major Environmental Movement. The battle over whether to dam Hetch Hetchy was one of America’s first big conservation fights. John Muir passionately opposed the project, and although the dam was built, the controversy helped inspire the national park preservation movement. Fewer crowds, powerful history, and unforgettable hikes—Hetch Hetchy is worth the detour.

Hetch Hetchy was the original public land grab in the United States. Even tho no one talks about it. San Francisco should never have been allowed to build a dam here. It’s time to finally free Hetch Hetchy from the O’Shaughnessy Dam and allow these rivers at Yosemite National Park to flow free again. Like they did for thousands of years before colonization. We know this is possible. The Klamath dam removal project showed the world dam removal works. And river restoration saves the environment fast, because water is life. The tribes know what to do. Damming up the entire valley at Hetch Hetchy in Yosemite is a crime against Mother Nature. And it is the 1st example of a massive public land grab. Something that we are seeing today with public lands all over America under Trump. San Francisco claims to allow access to all of Hetch Hetchy as they are required to be law. But they only have a few trails and one road. They are violating federal law everyday. This is public land. Before the dam Hetch Hetchy was a biodiversity hotspot with grasslands old growth forests and a river fed by countless waterfalls. This was a true oasis for native Americans and wildlife. That should have been protected since it’s part of a national park. San Francisco saw the water here and decided to log the old growth pine and oak forest and dam up the entire valley. A native habitat that John Muir said was as beautiful as the famous Yosemite valley. Hetch Hetchy now is hidden beneath 300 feet of water thanks to the O’Shaughnessy dam. California doesn’t need more dams to steal even more water that wildlife and native plants depend on to survive. It needs to remove the O’Shaughnessy Dam and free Yosemite Valleys twin. Such an underrated spot in Yosemite! 🌊 Northwest of Yosemite Valley is a place John Muir described as God’s Best Gift and mountain temple with views that rival Yosemite Valley. In 1913, the valley was dammed to provide water for the San Francisco Bay Area and has been a controversial decision to this day. The hike has unmatched views with butterflies, waterfalls, creeks, granite giants, wildflowers and views of the amazing valley. Considered one of the most underrated places in Yosemite National Park, Hetch Hetchy is a gem that everyone must see at least once. Take the 4.6 mile round trip Wapama Falls Trail to the bridges with Wapama flowing in the background and under the bridges or continue to Rancheria Falls. Bring plenty of water as the trail is exposed to sun for a majority of time and apply sunscreen/cover up to prevent burns as the high elevation and exposure will cook you.
