Why Honeycombs Are Always Hexagons! Have you ever noticed that honeycomb cells are always hexagonal? Most people believe honeybees intentionally choose this pattern — but that isn’t entirely accurate. Bees actually start by making circular cells out of wax, and the inside of the hive stays warm because of the bees’ body heat. Over time, this warmth softens the wax, and those round cells naturally change into hexagons, because hexagons are the most efficient shape for the softened wax to settle into. Honeycomb cells are always hexagonal shaped, and most people think honeybees intentionally choose this pattern, but that’s not entirely accurate. Bees actually start with circular cells made of wax to store honey, and the hive’s temperature is naturally high due to the bees’ body heat. This heat, over time, softens the wax, and the cells naturally settle into hexagonal patterns, because hexagons are the most efficient arrangement. You can see a similar effect with soap bubbles, one bubble is round, but as you blow more, they press together and form hexagons.
