FUI just released a Modern Dance Class resource for dance teachers, so I wanted to explain how I think of the difference between the two:
So much of my (and others!) contemporary style is influenced by Modern dance, and today the two are often blended within a class labeled as “contemporary”
When it comes to teaching, I love utilizing true Modern dance techniques because it brings my classes structured exercises and clear objectives, which is especially helpful at the beginner level!!
For example, Horton technique is great for developing coordination, strength, and clarity in movement, while Limon Technique focuses on breath, suspension, weight and gravity.
Both are great for developing musicality, too!
I feel that today, these foundational movement skills and qualities are often missing in dance training.
The challenge is that many teachers want to address these things, but when it comes to incorporating Modern techniqque, they don’t have enough material to start🤔
That’s why I put together the Beginner Modern Class Pack— to make it easy for you to teach a true Modern dance class, or incorporate these foundations into your Contemporary classes!
This resource is a video library consisting of 30 videos of center technqiue, across the floor patterns, and progressions/combos based in the Horton and Limon techniques.
