Listen closely and you can hear this freshly hatched House Finch begging for one of its first meals! After a bush was cut down, and re-nesting was unsuccessful, we admitted a nest of four nestling House Finches—and even one egg that was actively pipping that hatched within an hour of arriving! House Finches are small, social songbirds that commonly nest in shrubs, trees, and even hanging planters and wreaths in urban areas. Both parents share feeding duties, offering their young a diet rich in regurgitated seeds and plant material. At this age, hatchlings are incredibly delicate and require round-the-clock care. Babies this small need to be fed every 15–20 minutes from sunrise to sunset to ensure proper growth and development. It’s an intense schedule, but vital for their survival. Stay tuned as we share their progress on the road to release! #WildlifeRescue #BirdRescue #OrphanedBirds #BabyBird #BirdRehab #WildlifeRehab #NestlingCare #RescueAndRehab #WildlifeConservation #UrbanWildlife #HouseFinch #Songbirds #FinchLife #BirdsofInstagram #BackyardBirds #BirdLovers #BirdNerd #DidYouKnow #NatureLovers #RescueStory #SaveWildlife #BirdCare #rehablife #congressofthebirds #wildliferehabilitation #wildliferehabber #wildlife #rescuerehabrelease #animalencounter

🔥Remember the story of the house finch that sought refuge in a chimney only to find himself fighting for his life? He first fell into the fire, managed to flap his way out, but then was attacked by the resident cat! 🐦After weeks in our care recovering and regrowing some feathers, he was finally ready to be released last week! The heartwarming moment he returned to his natural habitat was captured to share with you. 💚Thanks to our dedicated and generous supporters, happy endings like these are made possible. #GreenwoodWildlife #HouseFinch #CapYourChimney #WildlifeRehab

This House Finch was more than ready to go! Patient 25-1794 was brought in after being found with a minor case of Finch Eye Disease, which is a bacterial infection that most commonly affects finches and other small songbirds. This finch had red and swollen eyes, and was somewhat thin as well. In order to prep for release, we needed to give this finch medicated water in order to help control the bacterial infection, as well as plenty of food, and room to fly, in order to get the flight muscles primed and ready. This finch got released just a few weeks after admission! Finch Eye Disease can be common in backyard bird feeders and bird baths. The best thing you can do to help prevent this disease from spreading is to regularly clean out and disinfect your bird feeders and bird baths. You can also reduce the amount of bird feeders in order to reduce the potential for birds to congregate and spread the disease more. If you find a finch with red and swollen eyes, discharge in the eyes, or seems to be lethargic, reach out to your nearest wildlife rehabilitator (like us) for advice on the next steps! #westshorewildlifecenter #wildliferehabilitation #inspirecoexistence #housefinch #finch #fincheyedisease

Patient Update: Our baby finch patient is over one week old and thriving in our care! When the eggs were brought to us by a Good Samaritan, who had sadly found the mother bird had passed away, we didn’t know if they would still be viable. We were unsure exactly how long the mother had been away from her nest, and that uncertainty always carries risks. But we knew we had to take the chance—and for this little one, that chance has paid off. While it seems like this will be the only egg that successfully hatches, this tiny survivor stands as a powerful reminder of why wildlife rehabilitators should push themselves to take on challenges and learn new skills. It is for lives like his. Our baby finch patient opened his eyes just two days after hatching and is now eagerly gaping for food every 20 minutes, receiving specialized formula and licensed care from our trained team of staff and volunteers. Raising a hatchling like this is a complex, delicate process requiring incredible precision, teamwork, and compassion—and we are honored to give him his fighting chance at life. Thank you to everyone who makes moments like this possible. Because of your donations and support, we are able to make tiny miracles happen—we truly couldn’t do it without you. Stay tuned for more updates on this little fighter as he continues to grow stronger each day!

Another house finch cleared of conjunctivitis and eager to be released! His before photo may look mild but he required two rounds of medication to clear the infection. House finches conjunctivitis is an infection that finch like birds acquire that is caused by a bacterium called Mycoplasma gallisepticum. The disease usually infects one eye first and then spreads to both causing blindness and starvation from an inability to see. The infection is spread by the birds wiping their faces on branches and bird feeders and then other birds coming in contact with the exudate. Birds that exhibit lethargy, fluffed out appearance or swollen face or eyes should be captured. Please place them in a small shoebox and call us. OWL can treat this disease and it has a recovery rate of 98% with treatment. To Prevent the Spread of the Disease Clean feeders and bird baths on a regular basis with a 10 percent bleach solution. Avoid using moldy seed, and keep the ground area around the feeder as clean as possible. During the summer, rake the area to remove accumulated seeds beneath the feeder. During the winter, shovel fresh snow over the area. Use nonporous plastic, metal, or glass feeders that are easy to clean, and provide ample feeder space to reduce crowding. Keep platform feeders clean and put out only the amount of seed that birds can consume within a day or two. Finally, don’t wait until sick birds are present to implement these precautions – routine cleaning is preventative. We would like to celebrate this bird’s return to the wild and take this opportunity to remind you to take down your feeders and give them a thorough cleaning once a week - especially important now that migration has begun, so they can remain healthy and set up for success on their journey south. #OperationWildlife #wildliferelease #kansaswildlife #housefinch #nativespecies #backyardbirds #songbird #psa
