This is Canelo (Cinnamon). He's an alfa male howler monkey at Senda Verde Wildlife Sanctuary, the Bolivian refuge we're helping. Canelo was rescued in 2009 by the Bolivian government from trafficking - a family had bought him in a wet market. He was 4 months old when the Bolivian government gave him to Senda Verde because he could not be released back into the wild.

Eventually, the female spider monkeys at Senda Verde nursed and nurtured him to health. But spider monkeys don't howl, and Canelo had nobody to teach him how to be his true howler monkey self.

That's where Marcelo, co-founder of Senda Verde, stepped in. Marcelo started to imitate the howler monkey call. He took Canelo to the mountain to show him how to howl. The first couple of times Canelo just looked at Marcelo without understanding what was happening. But one day, after some months of that continuous routine, Canelo suddenly reacted and did a low pitch short howl. After that, and with some practice, he became a true howler monkey! Now, every time Marcelo starts "howling" (as best a human can!) Canelo will start to howl sing with full force.

While this is a beautiful story, Canelo should've never been taken out of his habitat by wildlife traffickers in the first place. Luckily for Canelo he was rescued and is in the care of a well respected sanctuary. Many aren't so lucky. And now that wildlife trafficking has been connected to viruses like Covid-19, we know it has a dire impact on humans as well.
